New Zealand Network Apologizes For South Park Episode

New Zealand network C4 has apologized for airing the controversial South Park episode that featured a statue of a bleeding Virgin Mary. The broadcast had drawn the wrath of New Zealand Catholics. In a statement, the channel said that it "acknowledges the strength of feeling in relation to the program, and we sincerely apologize for any offense taken." It promised not to air a repeat of the episode since it had "detected a shift in the public's perspective on matters ... [relating to] religious satire."

So no more freedom of expression eh? World coming to an end when we have to start fucking apologizing for fucking cartoons.

CMR, I wouldn't say that offending people's belief is freedom of expression! What a bleeding Virgin Mary has to do with you expressing your feelings, that is just RIDICULOUS!!! What the fuck, I'm Catholic, and we have the Virgin Mary in high standard! And I think is so disrespectful to me and others that are Catholic to see this type of things, that are other ways of expressing yourself without criticizing people for their beliefs... Like that are lots of people that say stuff about Jews, Protestants and so on and so forth! If you don't have a religion, at least RESPECT others that DO!!

I'm a fan of South Park, but I have to admit that sometimes they go too far!!!

Sometimes, South Park, makes some comments, just to sound funny, there is no base on what they say, when they make fun of a religion without further explanation of why they're doing so, is just RIDICULOUS!! People laugh, because they're stupid! Why criticise Virgin Mary?? What is the point!! Offending people is the definition of going to far!! Especially using a Sacred image as the Virgin Mary represents to some!!

So what your saying is that we should shut down all radio and TV stations. It doesn't matter what's on... it's going to be offending someone. What you find funny offends somebody else and vice versa. So that pretty much leaves you with nothing. If there is something on TV that I find offending I change the channel. It's not a hard thing to do. But then there isn't much that offends me. I guess I can say that I can take a joke as well as give one.

I'm not a fan of South Park but only because I think it's boring and the voices irritate me. I didn't appreciate their attack on catholicism and I fully believe they went too far but I have to stand by the freedom of expression argument. Any infringement of that fundamental right is prejudicial to society as a whole.

I'm a catholic too, but I am not a going to church every Sunday type. I feel there is just 1 religion and that religion is BELIEVE WHAT THE HELL YOU WANT! The book of Catholics is made up just like every other religion but there is 1 thing I believe and that is there is a god. That is all I need. You don't have to go to church to pray or to worship. Some black guy asked me if I had been to the church of god this past Sunday I said has he been to my house lately? He gave me a dirty look and walked away. If I don't preach to you, don't preach to me. I feel all this fighting about religions is bullshit considering that WE don't even know which one is the right one but we all worship some sort of god or gods who eventually turn out to be ONE GOD, ONE higher creator or being. All this fighting shows how much people need to looses their assholes and live and not worry about bullshit

Um, they had the freedom to run the episode.   Their customers had the
freedom to cancel their subscriptions if they ran the episode.   They
did a little thinking and decided they rather liked getting the
customers' money.

This is freedom in action.   No one demands the station run something
or censor something.    No one demands that people buy the station's
services.   Why is that so horrible.

Personally, the episode cracked me up, and I'm a devout Catholic. Then again, I live for satire, and South Park is just about the last bastion of satire left on the planet.
