"Butt Out": so, what was the message?

It sounds like Trey and Matt are in the "If you don't like cigarette smoke in your face, then why don't YOU go somewhere else - oh, and close all fast food restaurants while you're at it" camp.

(One thing I was half-expecting that they didn't use: have the whole "Butt Out!" thing being run by the tobacco company to show kids that "not smoking turns you into complete and utter lame-oids like us" (sort of how tobacco companies are really accused of doing something similar with their "Truth" TV ads). Then again, they pale in comparison to the new "Partnership for a Drug-Free America" ads about "Parents: the Anti-Drug", which sends the message "Don't be stupid enough to get caught!"...)

Speaking of messages, is that disclaimer that shows up at the end of the show - the one about the show being satire and not based on any real events - new, or have they been using it for a while? Reminds me of the "Some Celebrity Voices Impersonated" message that shows up at the end of "The Simpsons" every now and then.

Well if that's what it sounds like to you, you're not listening hard enough. They spelled it out quite clearly- The message on the pack of cigs says quite clearly that smoking is bad for your health. If you *choose* to smoke anyway, that's your right as an American. And as an aside, I've watched these anti-smoking, anti-drug commercials and I'm sickened by them. Especially the latest anti-marijuana one where they portray a toddler walking towards the edge of a backyard pool and implying that the toddler falls in, and then blaming the irresponsibility of the babysitter on marijuana- I was 15 once, and if I saw that load of crap, I'd think marijuana was completely harmless. I've smoked weed (as an adult) while babysitting and I'll tell you right here and right now- Pot isn't PCP, it isn't Heroin, it isn't even Beer or wine- If you're an irresponsible person, you're kids in danger, if your a responsible person who smokes pot- your kid is fine.

That said, I should also qualify my statements by saying that no child of mine would be allowed to smoke or drink or do drugs while under my roof- I'd invade their privacy, search their room, read their letters & diaries, force drug testing on them- what ever I feel is necessary to protect them.

Truth.com are a bunch of lying little pussies. I hate them. The thing that makes me most angry is that "Big Tobacco" is forced to pay for these ads telling people thay shouldn't use their product. America, the beautiful!

So nothing bad happened that time, but what about next time? I'll tell you this, if you babysitted my son and smoked pot at the same time, I'd kick your ass and I wouldn't pay you either. Do you agree that smoking pot does affect your mind in some way? Do you smoke pot and drive? If so, do you drink and drive? Would you drink while you were watching a kid by yourself? I'm not saying that you SHOULDN'T smoke pot (I don't, personally), but I am saying that you should be responsible with it. If you're going to take on a certain responsibility (i.e. like watching a kid) don't you think it would be in your and the child's best interest to have your head as sharp as possible.

person,

That's bullshit. I have a friend who smokes pot and drinks with some regularity. One joint affects him more than a can of beer does. He even admits that when he smokes, he's pretty much stuck at the place he happens to be, no more driving for him for at least a few hours (which is why he usually smokes at home). He can drink a beer and still be able to drive with no adverse affects.

So what's good for the goose isn't necessarily good for the gander, huh? Do as I say, not as I do? Like I said before, I don't smoke weed, and I would kick my son's ass if I ever caught him doing it. I do drink alcohol, and I don't believe I would have a right to be very upset with my son if I found out he was drinking, especially if he knows I drink. I would be pissed if he were doing something illegal, but that's just because I don't care for folks violating the law.

So, no one who's caring for a child should go to sleep? I promise you that even while stoned, I'm quite sharp. As a matter of fact, it provides me with a lot more tolerance for childish behavior so me and the kids get a long much better- I'm much more interested in what they're doing and saying so they've got that extra supervision that they may not have with someone who justs puts them in a room full of toys and tells them to keep quiet.

Well then, He probably shouldn't babysit while smoking weed, I guess.

Actually less than 5 minutes... which is a good thing that I'm a *responsible* baby-sitter, which is why I record a game that's on that I want to watch and spend time with the kid instead. I hate to cite it as an example, but the movie "Half-Baked" illustrates the point I'm trying to make- a responsible stoned person can take a greater interest in spending time with the child while baby-sitting, than a responsible non-stoned person. When I baby-sit, the kids get my full attention whether it's video games, board games or playing with dolls... or whatever.

I used to smoke weed heavily but I gave it up about 20 years ago. One thing I noticed about my friends who kept smoking after I quit, they were stupid when they were stoned. They were unable to see it, because they were stoned. Being high distorts your perception of time and makes it difficult to concentrate, hence the term "spaced out" as applied to those high on weed. One of the problems is that when your perceptions are distorted, you cannot rely on your perceptions to tell you how distorted they are of if they are distorted at all.

In other words, you say weed doesn't affect you much now-- but I say that it may simply be more difficult for you to accurately perceive the effects of being high, because you *are* high.

Of my friends from back in the dope-smoking days, the only ones I know who still smoke dope have sh*t jobs or are unemployed and on welfare or worse.

My objective experience is that as long as you are a regular dope smoker, you will not be able to manage your life effectively. Your observations may be different.

I can't disagree with what you're saying, though I have to say that your while your observations are true of most stoners, it's not true of all of them. When I smoke weed, I don't get "spaced out" and my perceptions are not distorted- In my younger days, I used more than just weed- I used to use crystal-meth (I never have nor would I ever babysit a child while under the influence of speed) anyway, one night a policeman pulled me over (I was riding a bike late at night against traffic- as I always do) and noticing that I my pupils were dialated suspected I was under the influence. So, while looking at his watch, asked me to silently count out 30 seconds. Police do this because people under the influence of speed have a distorted perception of time. Well I counted in my head 30 seconds and let the officer know 30 seconds had passed. I nailed it exactly and the officer let me go. Maybe I'm an exception to the rule, and if that's the case, I don't condone people smoking marijuana while babysitting.

I can see how you might think that, but it's not the case- I've always had a remarkable sense of my faculties even while drop dead drunk.

Depends on what we're talking about. We aren't talking about the priveleges that go with being an adult, like driving or voting or watching South Park. We're talking about behavior. If I smoke and drink and cuss in front of my son, I might be upset if he begins to behave the same way, but what sort of example have I set?

found

Why, I do it. Again, its an example of behavior. If I do it in front of him, then what can I expect. The other day I was watching a football game and yelled "Bullshit!" at an extremely poor call by an official. I didn't know it, but my son was standing right behind me when I did this. Guess what? He promptly ran into the next room and yelled "Bullshit!" within earshot of mommy. How can I be upset with him if he is only mimicing behavior he just witnessed his father, one of the people he looks up to, exhibiting that type of behavior? The same goes for alcohol. If I sit on the couch and drink a beer in front of my son every day, I may be upset if I find out my son is drinking, but again, what sort of example have I set? It might be better if I DON'T exhibit any type of behavior that I don't want my son to participate in. That way I would have a right to get good and angry with him.

I wouldn't have the right to be upset if I found out my son drinking if that was a behavior I was exhibiting in front of him, no. Well, you just mentioned second hand smoke. Truth.com asserts that second-hand smoke "kills about 53,000 people a year." Last time I heard, the verdict was still out on second-hand smoke. My dad and uncle GREW UP with second hand smoke, and both are very healthy. My mother-in-law, her two sisters and a brother all grew up with second hand smoke, and they suffer no respiratory or other illnesses associated with smoking.

Another is their story "In 1989 "millions" of cases of grapes were recalled after a small amount of cyanide was found in just two grapes. There is 33 times more cyanide in one cigarette than were found in those two grapes." Goodness me! What they fail to mention is that the grapes weren't recalled BECAUSE of those two grapes. Because of a threatening phone call made in Chile (the grapes' country of origin) the FDA recalled the entire shipment shipment because of SUSPECTED cyanide tampering, but ONLY found cyanide in two grapes out of MILLIONS of cases, and the cyanide amount found was not lethal. The cyanide found in the grapes was sodium cyanide (the stuff you read about in detective movies.) A lethal dose of sodium cyanide is about 150 mg. The cyanide in cigarettes is hydrogen cyanide, which is used as a fumigant in tobacco applications. A lethal inhaled dose of hydrogen cyanide is about 2000 mgs, there's about 10 mgs in a cigarette. Just about all of their "X product was recalled because of Y poison. There's about Z times more Y in a single cigarette than in X product" stories follow the same pattern.

Here's a good one- You know how truth.com has those anti-smoking commercial where they state that smoking kills something like 400,000 people a year? Well do you know how they get that figure? The get it by considering any death of a smoker as being caused by smoking, so if a smoker dies of a heart attack- that's a smoking death, if they die from Lupus, that's a smoking death, if they die of Lou Gehrig's disease, that's a smoking death, etc. etc.

The point is, do people who tell you "1 in 3 smokers die every day" count car accidents that as one of the deaths? The person died from a non-smoking related cause, but those who try to compile that stat see that the person was a smoker and also died, so BOOM "1 in 3 smokers die everyday" is factual, where "1 in 3 people die from smoking everyday" might be a load of crap.

Example: Bill Clinton's "14 children a day die from a gun." (using a stat from the Brady Campaign) He was trying to show how dangerous guns were to children, and illustrate how many kids die from gun accidents. However, to reach that statistic, the Brady Campaign used all gunshot deaths of people under the age of 19 and included suicides, gang-related shootings, and justifiable homicides. The reality is is that less than 500 "children" (aged 0-14) a year die from a gunshot, about 1.4 a day, and most of those are homicides. Less than 100 a year die from gun "accidents."
