This is a plea for peace on the war over South Park... please.
There has been talk since the airing of perhaps the first Mr. Hankey episode that South Park has been going "downhill". This is not true. Please don't stop reading just now! Let me explain why...
You people who hate South Park are expecting too much. You loved the first episodes, and you expect every episode to be like them. Well get over it! The show has to move on! And really if you look back those episodes aren't any funnier than the recent ones. It's just that you people are getting sick of the characters and such.
I'm sorry if you people feel this way about the show, but if you don't like it, don't watch it and for God sakes don't whine about it here. Let's just let South Park be a NORMAL SHOW for once, OK? I know, it's quite a concept, but I've never seen any show get picked apart nearly as much as you guys do to South Park.
The bottom line is... the humor in South Park is the exact same. It's your taste and your attention that has changed. South Park may have been the flavor of the day for some, but I will always love Trey's work.
Please stop the arguing, and stop the madness. Don't watch the show if you don't like.
This is an issue which I've thought a lot about lately, and wondered if I should bother posting anything.
I have faith in the people in this newsgroup, so here goes...
I've re-watched the first episodes recently and yes, the humor and the jokes and the writing are EXACTLY the same now as then. The quality of the show has not changed at all. If anything, the writing has gotten tighter and the comedy has gotten more sublime.
We, the audience, have simply gotten used to it. (And for me personally, it has me spoiled. "The Simpsons" is not as funny to me any more, but that's another thread...)
South Park is still funny as hell. But after hearing Cartman say "My mom says if I wanna be a lesbian I have to lick this carpet," I can't imagine too much else that will shock me and make me fall off the couch laughing like that did.
We've all recovered from the initial shock of seeing something this mind-bendingly funny on TV. It's not "new" any more, but that doesn't mean it's not funny.
I mean, you can only have one "first kiss." After that, it'll never be the first one again.
It seems to me like there are two distinct types of SP fans:
There are the type who watch the show ONLY because of the sophomoric toilet humor and raunchy situations.
I love that shit as much as anybody.
BUT...
Then there are the rest of us, who laugh our asses off at that obvious stuff, but also see the other levels. The satire, the absurdity, the sweetness.
Forgive my over-generalizations, but the first group seems to me to be the same type of people who take everything in SP literally, who got pissed off because they didn't see Trey & Matt's April Fool's joke coming a mile away.
They may or may not be the same people who like to post "SP SUCKS" type of posts in this NG.
I think that most of the show's fans (and people in this newsgroup) tend to fall in that second group. The problem is that we aren't as vocal as the first group.
Yeah, sure, Trey and Matt have said screw the message, they just want to make people laugh and say "What the fuck was that?!?" But there's more to them and the show than fart jokes, and we're glad.
Take heart, South Park fans! There are many, many, many of us here. We need to come out of lurking and chase away the trolls and spammers and all-around annoying people.

Yeah, it's difficult. No one has a harder time keeping her mouth shut or her fingers off the keyboard than me. But I'll pass on some advice my daddy gave me when I left home:
"If you wanna get rid of the weeds in the yard, don't spend your time pulling 'em up, cuz more will just grow back. You have to plant more of the good grass, and eventually it'll choke out the weeds and they'll die."
So let's choke the troll weeds out of this NG. Let's hear more from the people who really want to talk about the show and the Creators. We can all disagree with each other, but let's agree to ignore the trolls.
Exactly! Prithee, vent thy spleen elsewhere. You can talk about what you like and don't like about SP, but if you just rant and scream and bitch and complain, we're gonna ignore you till you go away.

Ok, this may be a really stupid question... but could someone explain the eating cardboard joke to me? That's the only one I haven't really gotten yet. It's been bothering me, but I've always been too ashamed to ask... :(
