Actually that's not entirely correct. Binaries are only supposed to be posted to binary groups (NG's with the word "binaries" in them). If a FAQ or HOWTO maintainer posted a compressed file to a non-binary group that would be a mistake, and accidental net.abuse. Also, binaries don't necessarily have to be compresses to be posted. But that's just common courtesy (like not posting binaries in discussion groups is supposed to be). Technically, all a binary is (as far as USENET is concerned) is a file that consists of non-text information.

Good point. I guess it comes down to 'good' binaries and 'bad' binaries. For example, news.admin.net-abuse.usenet, where most Usenet policy is at least discussed, if not made, has a regular FAQ posting if I am not mistaken. Tim Skirvin posted 5-6 FAQs a week or two ago, pertaining to net.abuse in general and Usenet in particular, and none of the Usenet.activists or news.admins complained. At least not about them being binaries posted to a non binary group. They are the occasional posting and as such do not require their own group. The flood of requests for South Park binaries have caused a proposal for a South Park binary group which is being discussed. I seriously doubt anyone would complain if it was a binary every week or so, maybe even three times a week. It's things like posting the _whole_ SOXmas in 50+ installments that annoys everyone.

This is completely ridiculous. First of all, newsgroups in the alt.* hierarchy are the EASIEST on the internet to create, and secondly, alt.tv.mr-belvedere is obviously an old group and should be deleted. I think the show was cancelled some time ago...
I would like to propose that a newsgroup be created called:
alt.tv.southpark.binaries
This newsgroup would be located in proximity to alt.tv.southpark, and hence would be easy to find. It would also reduce the posting of binaries to this newsgroup and make it easier to view.
The charter of the newsgroup alt.tv.southpark.binaries would be to promote the TV show South Park by allowing fans and users to download multimedia clips (sounds, movies, or whatever) for the further enjoyment of the show.
I have never created a newsgroup before, so whatever we need to do, let's get it done, now.
The nomination is on the floor already - we should find out officially in about two days.
