I don't know what the Latin translation is, but it's an English (as in grammar) term. You use it when you're quoting somebody and you KNOW that there is an error but, to preserve the exact quote, you leave it in. It's to show that the mistake is not yours, that you are simply keeping the mistaken because it was part of what you are quoting. The person must have seen it typed (probably as a typo by someone else) and asked the question of what it was as a joke.
