For my edification - what is a Cracker?
To me a cracker is a salty biscuit you eat with cheese - I gather it's an insult but is this a generic one, a racial one or what?

Technically, a "Cracker" is a poor white person from south Georgia (U.S.). Generically, a "Cracker" is any poor uneducated white person. A "cracker" is like a "phreak."

If you're looking for an etymological source, the term refers to the cracker barrel in an old-time general store, around which men used to sit and spout the kind of philosophy that comes from a bunch of men sitting around talking. A secondary meaning for cracker would be "pretense of wisdom." Probably also the source of the term "wise cracks."
Just look at the tradition of evenhanded politics and social tolerance represented by the Cracker Barrel restaurant chain!
