I think the episode would have worked better if they had also made fun of themselves by animating themselves as characters smelling their own farts. They're often as preachy as anyone else they complain about. I think it makes them come off as a bit hypocritical for them not to recognize that.

My take is that a lot of what he said was true and it was said to counterbalance the routine condemnation they get from slef-righteous idiots blaming Hollywood for the country's problems.
At the same time, it was still smug. Just like the show. Driving Hybrids is a good thing, being smug about it is not.

Of course, his speech had holes. Clooney commented on the Hattie woman from Gone with the Wind winning an oscar. However, roles for black people were (and maybe are, but I have not spent much tome thinking about it) still often limited through the 90s.
In many ways Hollywood is not progressive. However, (amidst all the crap) they have brought ideas for change to the mass public.
Who are they ahead of?
I see it the other way- Social change is an influence on Hollywood.

more people watch TV than go to movies more people watch DVD's/Videos than go to movies more people go to movies than read newspapers more people go to movies than read news magazines or news journals more people go to movies than read non-fiction books more people go to movies than go to church more people go to movies than vote more people go to movies than finish High School more people read popular fiction in all its various genres than read newspapers more people use the word "then" when they mean "than" than those who use the word "than" correctly which signifies a shocking lack of literacy which could indicate that the only way people are exposed to new ideas or social change is through television and film and they don't read the subtitles which generally are correct (except for closed captions which are an entertainment in their own right) ... this isn't really relevent it just bugs the hell out of me.
Of course, this is completely subjective and I could be wrong. ;-))
