Mothers Against Canada and similar organizations

Mothers Against Canada might have been inspired by similar organizations in real life.

For instance, The Parents Music Resource Center, who are responsible for the labeling of CDs and tapes that is still in effect today. This labeling results in censorship, because many outlets won't carry recordings that have strong labels on them.

Also, Action for Children's Television, who cleaned up and sanitized Saturday morning cartoons to the point where new cartoons have to be totally wimpy and insipid, and classic old Warner Brothers cartoons are butchered to smithereens to the point where they're no longer worth watching.

With both of those organizations, we ought to realize that the leaders were spending less time with their kids because they were dedicating so much of their time to crusading against the media. One of the most thought-provoking parts of the South Park movie was when Kyle's mom is making a "think of the children!" speech, while shooing away her son who wanted to talk to her.

I'd start with MADD - Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

While I don't care for how the PMRC has gone about its business, I firmly believe that CDs and tapes with questionable content should be labeled. In much the same way that movies with questionable content should be given ratings that reflect that content. music should also be labeled.

As for the retail outlets that refuse to carry CDs with strong labels, well, guess who the "bad guy" is. Hint: Ask Sam Walton.

The current movie rating system doesn't so much reflect content as it does dictate who should be allowed to see movies. It's kind of sad when "adult" means anything dirty or shameful to "polite society" (whose standards may not neccesarily be *mine*).

I don't know. You throw away the sex scandal, and Clinton looks like a decent president. Best in the last 20 years anyway. People can say what they want about the reasons for the amazing prosperity the US is currently experiencing, the bottom line is it all makes the top guy look good. From what I hear, his job approval rating is still pretty impressive.

But you can see how the public has decided to utilize the rating system. They take the official ratings under consideration, then decide for themselves whether a particular movie is suitable for them, or for their children.

It should be the same for music. AFAIC, a thirteen-year-old child should not be allowed to walk into a music store and buy a CD loaded with profanity. However, parents should have every right to purchase that CD for their children if they feel their children are mature enough to handle the material.

It works both ways. The artists make the decision whether or not to use 'questionable' material, so they have the ultimate control over how their CDs are treated after the jewel boxes are filled.

They say that they don't like him as a person, but I think that's due to the incredible brainwashing that has happened in the US since 1980 when the people behind Reagan decided that the rest of us aren't "real Americans" (quote from their 1980 literature). Remember how everything hip in the media came to a screeching halt in '82? (If you don't, you may be young enough to have experienced this brainwashing in school.) People are afraid to say publicly what they really think (in general). They may like to smoke grass now and then, but they'll join the anti-drug crusade because they're afraid of getting fired or having their car siezed by the cops. They may not care about Clinton's BJs but they'll pay lip service to the "general mood" because they're afraid their kids might be taken from them by some Xian social worker on phony charges. The post-Reagan world is a dangerous place. Remember how MTV reacted in '93 when Congress threatened them with hearings on "Beavis & Butt-head"?

You don't know about the whole "fire" ep ban? Remember the 1993 story of the 5-year old boy who was left alone with his 2-year old sister when his mom went to her neighbor's trailer for a few hours of beers? He set his trailer on fire and his sister died. They didn't have cable, but he blame it on Beavis & Butt-head (he had never heard of Canada I guess). There were also British & American tabloids blaming all kinds of things on B&B, and Senators started making noises like they were going to shut MTV down. Fritz Hollings (Southern cracker) said he was going to get "Buffcoat & Beaver" off cable (this is the same clown who Zappa challenged in '85 on the issue of "porn rock"). So MTV stopped broadcasting new eps for a week, pulled the original version of the one with Clinton visiting their high school (gave it a new lame ending) and took all references to "fire" out of the old eps. There hadn't been any action, but the threats were enough. I'm really surprised that Comedy Central isn't getting pressure from Congress for SP.

Nobody except Mike Judge & the gang at MTV know how it origianlly ended. They delayed it a full week with the excuse that "We don't want to involve the President" in the B&B controversy. They had been playing the upcoming ep up and then suddenly had to delay it for mysterious reasons.

No one else has done it, so I will. I'm invoking Godwin's law which states that in any protracted Net discussion one party will eventually call the other party "fascist" or "Hitler". When that happens the thread is terminated and the one who invoked the Third Reich loses.

Hey, have you ever heard the album Frank Zappa produced from those hearings? The cut "Porn Wars" includes the soundbite from Al Gore announcing to the world that he's a big fan of Zappa's music. Frank's reaction on the cut is the bewildered "...wait a minute!"

Lets hope they dont start carding kids when buying albums. Im 19,,but i look younger and I dont want to be constantly asked for my ID when buying something like GWAR. (Although I DO have my college ID). Speaking of GWAR ,,does anyone else think "Saddaam a go-go" should have been on the soundtrack?

What do you guys think of that practice the local cops (I still like to call 'em pigs) use to entrap liquor store clerks, by hiring kids and teaching them to narc/fink/rat and try to buy booze from the corner store? That's what they do when they need some etra cash, just like when they plant some MJ on someone and sieze his car and auction it of. God, how I hate pigs. If we ever get to the point where kids get carded when they go to Tower Records, it's time for making the '60s look like the '50s.

You know, since a lot of the posters here seem to be teens on both sides of the great 17 line, I feel pretty good about the coming decade.
