Hey, does anyone know where Mr. Hankey's name came from? A slang word that I'm not familiar with?
Mr. Hankey's Name
The story is true. When Trey was learning how to use the toilet he sometimes forgot to flush. At such times hsi father would take him to the toilet and explain that he had to flush the toilet, or Mr. Hankey would pop out of it, sing a little song, and then kill him. Needless to say, Trey wanted to live.

Needless to say, that is a very stupid thing for any parent to say.

Not surprisingly, a recurrent theme of the show is that parents lie, right to their childrens' faces.
I wonder how much of the inappropriate behavior written into the show stems from real life experiences.

Mark, the home-schooled kid, getting duct-taped to a bench, comes straight from something Trey did in fifth grade: he duct-taped a kid to a bench and left him there all day under threat of bodily harm if the kid told anyone. Once the teacher found the kid still taped to the bench the kid tried to explain that he taped himself onto it, but he never did tell on Trey.

Hmmmmmm. That's how I come up with a lot of my Beavis & Butthead fanfic scripts. In high school I knew these guys, one taught me how to crimp books (set up on end open & stomp) and he sold gulps of wine out of his car at lunch (one of those 5-gal. things), and flushed a whole lot of shirt and towels down the boys' locker room toilets on the last day (they rotted and burst the pipes over the summer). Another guy tried to shut the school down with a phoned-in bomb threat, and he blew up a locker with an M80 at lunch (while a third guy planted a noisy clock in his locker), plus he also permanently disabled the Drivers' Ed VW Beetle, bent the big V-hinge to the door to the room where the faculty would meet (during their meeting), & broke off pencil leads in classroom door locks. He also had this trick of wrapping a chain around the drive shafts of cars parked over grates and some of the grate rails. (Car would start up, rattle a bit, then take off and the drive shaft got pulled out. It was unbelievable!) And the two of them once got some grass, got laid by two Mexican chicks, tried to drive home on a foggy night an nearly ran into a huge auto accident pile-up and careened off the freeway into some iceplant, ran over a sprinkler and busted the muffler to the car and stuffed it with rug pieces. Plus we all used to do major vandalism to construction sites on weekends. Out of the three of us, the only guy who ever got caught was the guy who made the bomb rhreat. He blew up the locker right in front of the swim coach. To this day, they still don't know who killed the VW or who flushed those towels down the toilets.
Not too much weirder than parents saying that the "stork" brought babies or that babies are found in a cabbage patch. Or that ever so good lie about going out after dark and the boogeymen getting you, just so you'd come home on time.
No necesarily wierder, but definitely less intelligent.
Toilet training is a stressful enough period for both children and parents. Telling your child, who is likely to believe anything you tell him at that age, that if he forgets to flush his crap will sing a song and then KILL HIM?? My god, what would Freud say?? Nothing, 'cause he's dead, but run this little vignette past a Freudian Analyst and you'd be surprised at the psychological damage comments like this are laiable to cause or promote.
You don't think there are "boogeymen" out there after dark?
Maybe teaching a child to fear a mythical contruct early in childhood can help him avoid drug dealers, street gang members and other assorted miscreants that populate dark city streets, later in his childhood. "Better safe than sorry" as it were.
But I have a hard time trying to place telling your children that their bowel movements can kill them in any sort of positive frame of reference. I suppose it will insure that the toilet gets flushed every time, but at what cost? And I suppose that if Stone hadn't had his mind warped enough when he was young, he may never have created South Park, so I suppose all's well that ends well I suppose.
But that still doesn't make his father's comment any less ignorant.

When they did those little "Don't walk off with strangers" bits, it gave kids a mental picture of what a stranger is, when in fact, people who wander off with kids act just as sane as anyone else, and seem just as nice.

Well, it can go the other way too, Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, etc. Either way it's lying to kids.

Of course ! There had to be a traumatic childhood experience that warped their sense of humor enough to come up with some of the episodes.<LOL>
thanks DAD
