I wouldn't rent Titanic, or watch it for free for that matter, if you personally came to my house, did a striptease, and administered oral sex throughout the entire thing.
I flat-out refuse to see that cheesey movie on general principle.

I didn't care much for the actual story, but I went and saw it at a theater for the special effects. Man, that ship was *impressive*. The engine room was spectacular! To me, some movies just have to be seen on the big screen, and this was one of them.

Hey, don't knock it till you've tried it. I wasn't going to go either, but I did, and while I certainly wouldn't call it the be-all-to-end-all that James Cameron believes it is, I thoroughly enjoyed myself for 3 hours and thought I got my eight bucks' worth. You always prejudge everything?
No, not everything... but ALOT of the time, when I get a feeling about how lame a movie will be, I'm right.
Like Deep Impact... looked lame, sounded lame, but I saw it anyway with a friend... and it SUCKED BIG TIME.
Same with a bunch of other movies I've seen, despite better judgement.
I'm not a big fan of period pieces, and while I can appreciate the FX and set design, I don't want to waste 3 hours of my life sitting through a contrived, recycled, poorly-written love story, and having to stare at that fatass Winslett and that pouty-lipped gay heroin addicted jerk DiCraprio, just for 5 minutes worth of a ship breaking in half and sinking.
I won't do it.
And besides.... I can't, with a clear conscience, contribute to a movie that toppled one of my all-time favs, Star Wars, from its position as the highest grossing of all time.
I will, however, personally go see the new Star Wars movies 50 times if it will help beat Titanic.

Hey, speaking of which, did you see that drawing that came out in issue 38 of the Star Wars Insider of the Star Wars characters jumping off Titanic? And on the botto it said, "Jim, congratulations! George" It followed the tradition started by Speilberg and Lucas when Star Wars bumped off Jaws as the #1 box office hit. But I assume you know this part. BTW, the article also said that although Titanic bumped off Star Wars as the highest grosser, keep in mind that tickets nowadays cost more. -Toni

Not to mention the fact that Star Wars commercialized the HELL out of itself... Cameron is making money on the box office sales, movie posters, and videos... (and DVD's, I'd imagine) but STar Wars had HUNDREDS of toys, books, posters, bedhseets, wallpaper, games, etc. etc. etc. and STILL DOES. I personally own about 3 dozen action figures from the latest line they came out with.
I have yet to see Titanic action figures, thank the gods.

And if any come out, James Cameron can thank "Star Wars" for that.
"Star Wars" was the movie that started the whole merchandise spin-off trend. No one had ever imagined doing such a thing before that. Part of the deal for the movie (which no one ever believed was going to make any money) was that Lucas retained the rights to produce and sell merchandise tied in to the film. Naturally it was given to him; the studio heads laughed at the idea. They're not laughing anymore.
Rabbit (I remember my brother, who was in LA for a writing job, coming home and saying, "There's a movie that's going to open here soon, and it's going to be the biggest thing you've ever seen, and it's called 'Star Wars'." And I said, "Yeah, okay ...")
Too bad the sinking lasted about an hour, buddy. Your ming must speed things up or something...
Ya, me too. But I liked Titanic. I still can't believe they actually made that ship look so damn real. It was like actually looking at the actual events. And the acting was good. I thought DiCaprio would fuck the whole thing up, but he played his part good. Kate Winslet on the other hand, she was just play annoying. Seeing her naked didn't even help her out. The sinking was incredible. I can't stand people who knock a movie just because they think they have something better to do like whack off. It's pitiful how jealous some people can get, it really is.

Actually, I heard from a couple of people, one a fan of naval history and an amateur historian, and another a movie critic friend, that the movie is HIGHLY inaccurate.
I apologize for not having any examples ready at this time... I shall see if I can contact them and see what was wrong with the movie.

So I've heard... and the set design is superb as well, but I'm not an easily-led sheep who is dazzled by FX and shiny things. Personally, I hated ALL the slippy-sloppy bits in Titanic, I hate Leo Di'Craprio (deliberate sp.mistake), and I'm a 15 yo girl =p. As for Lone Wolf, My boyf Jonny took EXACTLY the same attitude. I only got him to go see it because...uh, nevermind =p Lone Wolf (Chris Baile) wrote in message ...
I *don't* know why the hell all these girls are so crazy about him! Oy! I, myself, am a 15-year-old girl, and I really *REALLY* don't like him <shudders>. Same here. 'General principle'? What principle? Or is it just that holier-than-thou attitude that says that if a bunch of people like something, there's always going to be a few who refuse to acknowledge its existence because they're too good for it?
It was an entertaining movie, not a great one, and I thought I got my eight bucks worth.
I dunno, the best part of Titanic was the special effects. James Cameron's sad attempt at filling in the gaps was obviously not up to par. In case you notice titanic may have won a ton of emmy's but those were for special effects, and soundtrack, and directing. They didn't win any points for acting or screen play. My point? Special effects were great but the inbetween wasn't all that great. -me
Ah, but it did win -- not Emmys (those are for television) but Oscars, and it took the top banana -- "Best Picture". I agree, the story was very weak, and in places extremely frustrating -- for heaven's sake, we know she's going to get the handcuffs off him, it doesn't have to be dragged out for twenty minutes. Despite the lousy dialogue, though, I still didn't feel like I'd been in my seat for three and a half hours.
Ah, my naive friend! "Best Picture" -- or any Oscar, for that matter, or Emmy, or Tony, or whatever -- is given out for box office success and for whomever throws the best party and knows the right people. Not since "Casablanca" has Best Picture been given out solely on the basis of artistic content and acting ability ...
I agree although the bloke below this does'nt seem to (bastard), why would anyone want to see a film about a sinking ship(does it in the film?) what if I was one of the survivors seeing the film I'd have a stroke!!
Just one question: what principal? Just because it is really popular doesn't mean you have to hate it, just to be different. (Sorry if that's not why, it's just I know so many people who are like that) And it isn't just a chick flick, I went with my boyfriend, and he liked it too.
I cried so hard during Titanic. Cuz IT SUCKED SO BAD. I was laughing so hard tears were flowing when Jake (whoever leonardo was) and Rose were freezing their asses off. PUhlease...that looked just a little to fake. -me
Thank you. A guy I work with is a movie critic for a Delaware Valley-area newspaper... and he described in great detail how rediculous many scenes like that were.... like, as the ship is sinking, the bitch says "This is where we first met!"
Uh, honey? It's about to get REAL fucking cold and wet. Shut up and do something constructive like finding a life preserver.
There's only ONE scene I woudl like to see... but I'm not wasting two and a half hours and 4 bucks to rent the tape for it... I'll see it when Titanic comes on TV.... when the musicians are playing as the ship sinks.
That's cool.
But the rest of it, pass.

3-1/2 hours that I will never be able to re-claim from my life.
2) It wins an Oscar for best set design - BEST SET DESIGN MY ASS!!! Those set designers wern't very creative. They had plenty of documents to reference.
The boat still sank.
The whole jewel thing was very predictable and cheezy.
5) Titanic 2 the sequel: The ship is raised from the Atlantic, then towed from the East coast to the West coast by a Ford Pinto. The Pinto gets stuck at Donner Pass in a snow storm where the driver of the Ford Pinto has to eat his only passenger to survive. The driver is rescued by a man searching for Big Foot in a Volvo. They then continue the journey together, fall in love, and park the rotting Titanic in James Cameron's front yard. James Cameron's neighbors revolt and contact the City Council of the eye soar, and James is thrown in jail. The End.
Well, there was definitely a lot of "willing suspension of disbelief" necessary ... they would have succumbed to exposure while they were running all over the bowels of the ship just trying to get to the upper decks.
I think the best part was where Rosie jumped off the lifeboat. I was like MORON, no way in hell would that happen in Real life. -me PS. Wasn't if funny when the guy fell off and hit the proppeller?
