I am at work, so I haven't seen the new episode yet. I came in here to hear what it was like, and there are no posts on it.

Weird.

Always in favor of making fun of old peoples' driving skills. I've been advocating mandatory driver's testing of senior citizens for a while now. You've got to figure the majority of people over 50 probably never had driving lessons aside from their friends or parents... certainly no classes in school. I've heard horror stories about seniors who don't know seemingly simple and logical traffic safety rules.

When I was working at a grocery store, we had an old guy drive through the foyer, breaking both sets of doors and injuring a little boy and a woman, before finally ramming into a pole on the other side. He said his foot slipped, which was utter bullshit because the guy who went to the car had to pull the keys and the car's tires were still peeling. I'm with George Carlin on this one, you shouldn't be allowed to drive if you can remember when there weren't any cars.

My other favorite excuse is "I hit the wrong pedal." Oh...I see. You didn't realize you were stepping on the wrong pedal when the car went faster instead of slowing down? You got the tall, skinny pedal on the right confused with the short, fat pedal on the left (or in the middle)? You didn't realize you had the wrong pedal when you started seing people disappear under your car, and felt a big bump? You didn't know you were stepping on the wrong pedal when the engine got louder, your speed increased (as indicated on the spedometer), and your engine RPMs increased (as indicated on your tacometer, if so equipped)?

Mandatory driving test once you reach the age of 60 and every four years after to renew your license. After the age of 75, mandatory driving AND written test every two years. If you violate the above rules, or are caught driving without a license, you are sent to jail for a minimum of 6 months, and your driving privileges are revoked for the rest of your life.

But no one will ever try to make a law that restricts old people's driving privileges, because old people are the largest group of voters in the country, and politicians want to keep their jobs. Hell, whats a few kids getting run down by some old folks on the way to Country Kitchen Buffet if you get to keep your cushy elected position?

caught

months,

Don't get me started on drunk driving. There was a kid in the town where I live that was hit by a drunk driver. Someone saw the kid do it and tried to hold him up until police arrive. He drove off and ran into a tree. Unfortunately, the driver was wearing his seatbelt and was unhurt. It was the driver's 5th DUI, but because his first two came as a minor, they didn't count against him for the DUI's committed as an adult.

I say first DUI; license revoked for 6 months, and you must complete driver's ed in order to regain your license.

Second DUI (you obviously didn't get the point the first time), off to jail for 6 months, license revoked for a year AFTER you complete your sentence, and again, you have to go through driver's ed. You'll also have to serve community service during the year your license is revoked. Your voluteer work will consist of assisting those disabled in auto accidents caused by drunks, as well as performing various duties for victims of drunk drivers who are hospitalized.

Third DUI, you go to jail for 2 years, and your license is revoked forever.

If you are caught driving with a suspended license as a result of one of the above infractions, you are automatically bumped up to the next one. (i.e. if you are driving without a license because it was revoked after your First DUI, you automatically have to serve the penalty for the Seccond DUI.) Anything beyond your Third DUI, and I think your feet should be amputated. I favor "creative sentencing" as well.

I hate to sound severe, but I don't think that's enough. To my mind, first DUI should result in loss of licence for good. It's not legal to wander around with a loaded firearm, and a drunk driver has a far larger weapon at their disposal. Statistically (probably) you are way more likely to get killed by a drunk driver, than getting shot. If you fired a loaded gun into a crowd, but missed hitting someone, you wouldn't be very likely to get a firearms licence reissued 6 months, or 6 decades later. One life lost to drink driving is one too many. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I know a couple of people who have been the victims of drink drivers. One of them is dead, the other paralysed. Neither of them will be getting their lives back in 6 months...

I put this "less severe" punishment in because sometimes people get pulled over for bullcrap reasons like illegal lane changes (not using a signal). Everybody makes mistakes, and if you make it once, then I think you should be given another chance.

It's legal to "wander around with a loaded firearm" in the state I live in. I do it all the time. It's called a CCW permit.

There's no "probably" about it. Every year, over 17,000 people are killed in alcohol-related crashes (about 41% of all traffic fatalities.) There are less than 1500 fatal firearm accidents per year. In 2000, less than 11,000 people were killed by intentional use of a firearm (not counting suicide). That's including both legal (law enforcement, self-defense) and criminal use.

Hey, I don't blame you one bit for the way you feel. It's kinda hard to argue with you.

Actually this is quite common. People hitting the gas instead of the brake and people thinking they are in reverse when they are in drive. Its just not old people either.

There is also the famous Audi/60 Minutes debacle. The scumbags at 60 minutes got a lot of people who complained about "sudden exceleration" with their Audi's to get on TV and blame Audi for covering up a problem. These people would swear that when they put the car into gear the car would suddenly excellerate, launching it forward. 60 minutes did their usual liberal hack job and almost put Audi out of business. Audi claimed that it was impossible for the cars to suddenly accelerate; it must be that the people had their foot on the gas by mistake. Audi eventually proved that this was true by adding a saftey feature so that your foot must be on the brake before putting the car into gear and the incidents went away.

As for the SP episode, it was pretty lame.

Bullshit #1: use the label "liberal" for anything that pisses you off, sort of like "communist" was thrown around in the 60's. Example: Goddamnit, don't you just hate it when a fucking liberal prostitute charges you for a lousy blow job and then throws up all over your pick-up?

Bullshit #2: assume that an international company (for which the US market is a secondary target) can be put out of business simply because a few TV-zombie Americans watch an "investigative report" in what passes as journalism between the commercials.

Must have been produced by liberals.

Charles & Mambo wrote in news:[email]:

You got me. Clearly the people involved with 60 minutes are staunch conservatives. They have no liberal bias at all.

Your kidding, right? This report destroyed Audi in the US. It took them a long time to get back to where they are now.

Or just writers who have run out of ideas and are just finishing out their contract with Comedy Central. I'll let you make the call.

Dave wrote:

Yeah, that's it. Whoever has a different view from that fat-ass druggie hypocrite Limbaugh, the American Taliban-in-Christ Pat Robertson and the know-it-all airbag O'Reilly is a liberal.

That stupidity notwithstanding, I addressed the issue of using the word "liberal" in the derogatory context, as if actually being a liberal is something to be ashamed of. Nowhere did I attempt to argue any network's bias or slant. This is clearly idiotic, since liberalism carries the notion of liberties even in its very name. It is precisely the holier-than-thou conservatives who keep repeating this bullshit, hoping their hollering will mask the fact that they are against all sorts of personal freedoms and liberties, like sexual choice, abortion right, euthanasia, narcotics, secularism, etc. The conservatives are allegedly for no government interference, but that just means they want hands-free policy in business - when it comes to who's fucking who and who's injecting what into his/her veins, no government can be big enough for the hypocrites like Ashcroft, Santorum, Bush, Robertson, Limbaugh, Coulter and the rest of the scum.

Get real. Audi's and VAG's primary market is Europe and Audi sells a high-end range of automobiles, i.e. the target is the audience that does not depend on what Jerry Springer says on a given day. This argument is the same as the stupid-ass beef industry suing Oprah for ruining their business.

Nah. It's a liberal conspiracy to ruin the good old American fun.

Got to be a Chocolate Jesus, better than a cup of gold See, only a Chocolate Jesus can satisfy my soul When the weather gets rough and its whiskey in the shade Best to wrap your Savior up in cellophane

I knew it was a load of shit when I read one quote where the person driving the Audi through the back of their garage stated, "It just kept going no matter how hard I stepped on the brake." or something to that effect.
