doc you made a few mistakes in that note. you see us peoples who are really screwed up dont use punctuation and we dont capitolize either. ok maybe once in awhile when we rember but you didnt follow the correct format rember dont use the shift key or the spell checker or the punctuation try to blend your sentinces into each other and make them hard to read

I'm probably gonna get verbally lynched for agreeing to some extent with roman, but yes I agree that the Simpsons version of humor and plot is on a higher level and more advanced than South Park. I'm a huge Simpsons fan and think the show is great. However, I'd like to add that South Park has its own charm and there is more to it than the swearing, catch phrases, certain repetitive actions (Kenny dying), and toilet humor. South Park, like the Simpsons, is satire and parody. South Park is just on a different level.
Fershure it probably makes most of us queasy to agree with anything Roman says, but there's a grain of truth in his comment. A grain, mind you.
The Simpsons' writing is probably more *complex* than the writing in SP. That doesn't necessarily mean it's more intelligent, and the whole notion of "intelligence" in humor can be a red herring anyway. The Simpsons has much more general appeal than South Park, and it does a lot more work, in certain episodes, to inject pop- and not-so-pop-culture references. So in some ways you need to be more roundly educated to get all of the jokes and references in The Simpsons -- especially, say, in some of their Halloween episodes. (This year they're reportedly doing a similar thing with *biblical* spoofs at Easter -- yike, brace for mail.)
None of this means Simpsons viewers are smarter, or Simpsons writers are smarter, or the body of knowledge required to get all the jokes in one show makes it inherently superior to the other. You could call the Simpsons more "highbrow" at these specialized times, but South Park has its share of that too, often made more effective by its incongruity (such as Kyle's parroting of the psychobabble explanation of why drugs are bad). And beyond that, the idea of ranking *either* show as better because of its highbrowness is enough to make me fall over....
I have no qualms about laughing at the off-color humor in South Park, and the fact that SP's humor is usually executed so *sharply* sets it apart from the Simpsons (and anything else). But I watch both and have no need to declare one better. Because The Simpsons is often more densely packed with oddball references it could be called more *cerebral* than SP but that means little in terms of its value. (You might also call Mark Russell's humor "cerebral," but I'd like to kick him in the nuts, in the unlikely event he has any.)
If the only measure of the value of humor was the exercise it gives our brains, it probably would've been much harder to devise and perpetuate "comedy" of any kind in the mass media, and we'd be lucky to have gotten the art form as far as vaudeville, let alone to television.
