Essay?

I'm probably missing something obvious, but what Spanish word did the Mexicans think the boys meant by "essay"? I don't know of any Spanish <ece>, <hece> or <hese>, and <ese> doesn't seem very likely.

Just catch one of those "white teacher goes to the barrio to teach hispanic and other minority kids the joys of living" movies on cable or at the theaters, or rent the 80's movie Stand and Deliver. They're usually sprinkled with that term, its just another word for "homeboy", or friend.
