To "jump the shark" is to pull a gimmick in order to give new life to a fading program. It began in "Happy Days," when the Happy Days gang went to Malibu for a vacation (like the families did to Aspen in episode 603). Fonzie felt he was losing his touch with women, his coolness, indeed, his manhood, so he tried to get it all back by jumping over a shark while on water skis. People have been saying South Park has jumped or is jumping the shark. Here's a list of moments South Park could have jumped the shark:

1. Mr. Hankey is introduced - a talking piece of poo? 2. Terrance and Phillip in Not Without My Anus - a lot of fans felt cheated out of knowing who Kenny's father was. 3. The movie - the show pales in comparison to the movie after that. 4. Fourth Grade - now in a new grade and with a new teacher, the show isn't the same. 5. Timmy is introduced - the show was fine without him; why bring him on? 6. Kenny Dies - One of the four boys is gone and a new boy takes his place. A change of cast can doom a show 7. Asspenn - an episode in which the cast goes on vacation can doom a show, as the original formula is seen as spent and no longer workable.

South Park is in transition right now, trying to stay fresh while keeping much of the character it started out with.

He's not a bad character; it's just that they seemed at times like they were trying to make him into the fifth main character, which was unnecessary.

This isn't Jumping The Shark at all. It's an animated show, so I don't think vacation episodes mean anything in that context. They've been to freaking Marklar for God's sake, not to mention Washington DC, and wherever they went in the "Brown Noise" episode. The Aspen episode isn't even leaving the state.

Yeah, but none of those were "South Park on Marklar" or "South Park in DC" or "South Park in Kansas City", complete with different opening... except for the Marklar episode but that wasn't "South Park on Marklar" that was "Starvin Marvin..." something or other.

i don't understand how you can say it's lame that they had "south park in aspen"... that wasn't supposed to be a "real" ploy to get viewers. it's not as if they thought they could draw viewers by having an episode set in aspen, considering it's an animated show and they didn't shoot it in aspen. how can a difference in animated setting be a draw? it was a parody of shows that are set in different locales.

You're not getting it... it's a parody of all those final-season gimmicks you see in other shows.

Actually, the movie and the Aspen episode of this week are more reminiscent of the Hawaii episode of THE BRADY BUNCH than the shark episode of HAPPY DAYS. But that's just my opinion.

Although Butters does bear a striking resemblance to a spectacle-free Cousin Oliver...

It's a lame phrase someone made up to hype his webpage which describes the point in a TV show at which it inevitably is heading towards cancelation, ie, "The ep of 'Happy Days' in which Fonzie waterskies over a shark tank".
