I dunno, there have been some good fanfics (not just South Park) that stay close to the original show concepts. But too many have been hella-lame....what's with that pinwheel crap? Star Trek fics, for example, have many examples of wretched excess. Trek fans invented the term "Mary Sue" for fanfics that feature a character based on the writer--a character that ends up saving the day and is fawned over by Kirk et al.
