hey, man, let me tell you something. if you knew anything about people who do smoke pot or <insert drug here>, i GUARANTEE you that the vast majority of them would like the show. the only people i can think of who WOULDN'T like the show are fucking conservative, biblethumping, just say no, intolerant fools who wouldn't know how to have fun if jesus himself was lighting a pipe for them (and i guarantee you, jesus smoked some type of herbs back then; in that whole middle-eastern part of the world, that's where the whole idea of pipes came from, unless the indians beat them to it, but they developed separately)
so before you start making sweeping generaliatrions like that, make sure you know what you're talking about.

Oh no, South Park is definitely for the 18+!
With me being 13 does that mean I have to stop watching? And there was me thinking I could understand it too, doh!
I don't like what the guy has done but it a'int down to you to say that South Park is for 18+. All my 13 yr old mates watch it and really enjoy it so watch your mouth next time..
Heh. Some of these people..... I definitely agree with you, Mike! The 18 + thing is just a standard. There are plenty of exceptions. Basically, I'd just go by the individual person, not their age, on determining if they can watch a show, movie, etc. I've seen 18 year olds that I wouldn't allow to see a PG movie, if I was their parent! :) Maturity doesn't really have all that much to do with age. Just only if you're going to compare a 5 year old to a 25 year old, then it does have bearing. But comparing a 15 year old (that's my age) to an 18 year old (for example), it only has to do with how mature the *person* *themself* is. An age is a number, not your brain.

Good.
Well it does depend a little on the show, but South Park? It just a cartoon. If it was a drama series and the killings (even tho there aren't many) would look more adult. But you can't get an 18+ for a cartoon!
Obviously, but the guy wasn't. He was comparing 13 to 18. So I felt really angry, just cos I'm 13 DOESN'T mean I have any less right to watch my favourite show!
Exactly.
Just because it's animated, does not mean it is automatically for children. Some of the SP content is really inappropriate for kids, but not all of it. I'd rather let kids watch it, and hope that they "don't get it" than ban them...what's the point...all the sneaky little bastards will watch it anyway.
Sorry, but there is a big difference between 13 and 18. Age may not make you mature, but the fact of the matter is that with age comes privileges of being older. Hopefully too some wisdom.
So although you may feel it's your "right" to watch SP at age 13, you are wrong. It's not your "right" at all. You are below the age advisory - well here in Canada anyway - so indeed you sneaky little bastard, you have the privilege of watching the funniest animation on tv.
Good on you for being a sneaky little bastard, but, just remember children, what you see on tv, well...guns and schools do not mix. Flaming Farts and diarrhea...thats another story...

It's not my rights? Well excuse me! My family paid for out TV, paid our TV licence so that gives me the right thankyou!
I'm not snealky at all! My parents don't mind me watching it, in fact they even read my fanfics!

No it doesn't. Those are all privileges.Try and understand the difference between rights and privileges before you speak.
Yes well he isn't 13 now is he. Privileges come with age. Wait your turn.
Jon
In article , Jon writes
And this new found maturity will help me understand what South Park is about? So for all you under 18's out there just wait a couple of years and you'll find out exactly what it is you're watching.
So my privilage will turn into a right when I'm 18?
You just said I already had a privilege, but not a right so I suggest that you get your argument sussed.
Mike Jakeman wrote:
Ok, when someone quotes a single line and replies to it. What he writes applies to that line exclusively. Try and put that into effect next time.
Wether you're 18 or 13 or 38. Owning a TV, living in an area where people are gracious enough to broadcast programming over the airwaves for your TV and so on are all privileges. You don't see starving kids in Africa crying because they have the right to watch South Park now do you but aren't allowed to now do you? Look up the definition of privilege in a dictionary.
Lets put everything in it's place first. 1- You have the privilege of owning a television and being able to watch programming on it. 2- Another privilege that comes with age is to have access to a wider array of programming containing subject matters not always suitable to a younger audience.
Two different privileges. I suggest you understand what someone else is saying before you reply to it.

Knash. I was quoting (only not quite) Cartman. I was trying to be funny, but it didn't work very well. This is not debate, its pedantic bickering over semantic. Your arguments are based on nothing important and are simply an excuse for you to go at eachothers throats. Its funny the way you're all arguing over maturity and all have the mental age of eleven. If there's one thing the South Park phenomenon has highlighted, it's the widespread *underestimation* by supposed "adults" of the intelligent and maturity of American teenagers.
There's no reality-based reason to tell people to "wait their turn" to have opinions and insights when they're already smart enough and aware enough to understand the principles of (and the satire within) the things they're exposed to -- including things like South Park. Overall, some of the most intelligent and insightful comments I've heard about South Park over the past year (it's almost a year old now) have come from people who can't even get a driver's license yet.
Age discrimination takes many forms, but the routine, gratuitous, and categorical dismissal of the opinions of "the underage" is perhaps the most reprehensible of all. If you're afflicted with this notion -- the notion that years, in and of themselves, confer intelligence -- I have only one piece of advice: get over yourself, pigfucker.
BTW, I'm 46.
Poor old timer, obviously senile, can't be held responsible for his ravings. THANK YOU POPS, GOOD POST....ya have to humor them.

It's overtly implied in the third quoted line above: "Wait your turn." Get your own glasses adjusted... sonnyboy -- I don't wear any. Don't sit there on your ample ass (hell, if you can make baseless assumptions, so can I...) yelping about "privileges" & then claim you aren't trying to stifle opinions by telling people to "wait [their] turn."
But beyond that, who the hell are you to decree the rules for TV watching in private homes? The choices made by the parents of 13-year-old posters aren't being offered here for approval by you (or any other garden-variety control freak). If you can't participate here without raising a stink over those issues, nobody's ever gonna take you seriously and you might as well be typing with your PC turned off.
Your user ID is sadly appropriate, but it's never gonna change anything.
mtangard@[REMOVE_THIS_TO_REPLY]CRL.com wrote:
Nice psychic wannabe analysis of my writing pops but wrong. Maybe your mind isn't quite what it used to be. You're imagining things that aren't even there. That's bad. All I said was that privileges come with age and that that little kid is going to have to wait until he's 18 himself to enjoy them. Nothing more.
Oooh. That's nice. Now let me throw this back around at you. Who are you to decree the guidelines based on whitch people decide take others seriously on this newsgroup huh? If you don't want to read my posts, then stick me into your kill file and good riddance. I couldn't give less of a shit what some person on the other side of the planet thinks of me.
Very mature! Sounds like something a teenager would pull out of his ass.
You ENJOY these so-called "privileges" that you got when you turned 18? Personally, I wished I never got them. Being 17 and under is the best. I'd give up paying rent, going to jail, working for assholes, becoming a regular part of the system, etc., to have that naive, wide-eyed look upon my face when I went to school and smoked pot, stole beer, watched SNL and shows like South Park, renting Porky's and Kentucky Fried Movie and just laughed, not analyzing it along with my rights and privileges. I think its all bullshit about you trying to defend yourself when you should just remember the good times you had when you were a kid. You can't negotiate with someone when they know you think you're better than them.
There is no basis for you to decide who must wait. You sound like you're barely 13 yourself, too self-absorbed to realize that most people see that, and too spoiled to realize you can't control other people's input.
That wasn't a "guideline," oh illiterate one; it's a prediction. You are the one making decrees, junior.
Now, when did I ever say that? I feel your posts are essential to this forum -- every newsgroup needs a laughingstock.
Eeeuugghh! Granted, someone probably should "stick you" but don't look around here for that favor.
The only good thing about attitudes like yours is that they'll probably prevent you from ever reproducing.

Sure there are some younger kids mature enough to understand it for what it really is but they don't make the norm. And at 13 I doubt that you are watching SP for the same reasons older people are. Put a 18+ rating on something and it'll attract teenagers like a magnet. The fact that your "mates" enjoy it means nothing. The real question is WHY do they enjoy it.

Yep! I went there, and personally I thought he made some good points, I think a character who keeps dropping a brick on his foot every week would be funny. But I must also disagreeing with him, I believe that if it was done differently every week it would still be funny.
In fact here's a clip from my latest fanfic "Fried Green Salami" or "Soylent Kenny", which introduces Mr. Britts, an assistant janitor (at least in this fanfic, his occupation changes every episode), from the UK, who is hideing out in SP without a green card for dubious reasons.

Cartman: Huh!? what the hell you talkin' 'bout Stan?
