Nothing validates an opinion more than brutal opposition to that opinion. The reason SP is gaining popularity is because right-winged moralist are opposed to its content. If SP were ignored by these people, there would be a core audience and a possible increase in viewership over time. But now, it's gaining popularity because it has exposure. Even bad exposure isn't neccesarily "bad" exposure.
As for the "dieyuppie"-flames, if noone responded...there would be no fuel for the fire and no reason for a response to the response. Eventually, "dieyuppie" would get bored and go away.
Having said that, I must admit that I'm entertained by the flames. I'm even checking the NG more often, to find out what is being said. I think "dieyuppie" is fairly un-original in his posts, but the responses are very interesting.
