What were they talking about at the beginning of the episode?

That is the exact same question I asked. It must have been 1 of 2 things. A total fake out, or something really awful.

Probably a spoof on when one episode gets substituted for another episode due to tragic events. Given their tendency to joke, viewers wound up watching the whole episode with half an eye out for Lemmiwinks.

Maybe they made it up. Or they spent too much time vacationing in Hawaii instead of writing a coherent script. It certainly grabbed attention, when everyone was expecting their standard TV-MA disclaimer.

www.epguides.com claims that the Lemmiwinks episode has been delayed for production problems. The Awesom-O episode was production 802, so it presumably had its own problems keeping it from airing earlier this season. Had it aired when intended, we wouldn't have had Mrs. Cartman's comment that Eric was grounded for trying to wipe out the Jews, and the Passion episode would have aired the actual week of Easter.

That's what I was thinking too. As for why Trey and Matt did this, I have two possible reasons for this:

1. It's probably Trey and Matt's way of saying that the Lemmiwinks episode isn't finished yet, and thus decided to replace it with the A.W.E.S.O.M.-O episode.

2. Trey and Matt, pulling another "Not Without My Anus", got people excited with the Lemmiwinks episode (which was still being worked on), and then pulled a switcheroo at the beginning of the epiosde (although the people behind South Park did inform people that the A.W.E.S.O.M.-O epsidoe was going to air instead of the Lemmiwinks episode on the South Park Studios website).

Since it was in fact two weeks ago that Cartman tried to exterminate the Jews, it seems that the Awesome-O episode was always intended to be shown last night. Of course it is possible that the two weeks ago line could have been a last minute change.

The problem with that is that this is 802 and that was 804 and thus this was supposed to air 2 weeks BEFORE he tried to exterminate the Jews, and insyndication, this is going to be really messed.

Production order doesn't necessarily dictate the order they are supposed to be aired. Lots of shows sometime juggle the order around for various reasons, whether a show will take longer in post-production than others, the availabilty of a guest star, whatever. This isn't even the first time it's happened on South Park. The 100th episode "I'm a Little Bit Country" was production episode 701, yet aired after 704, 702 and 703 aired, in that order. With that ending though, it's clear that "I'm a Little Bit Country" was always intended to be the 100th episode aired.
