Has anyone else noticed these two new things about South Park in the Damien episode: the new TV-14 rating (which I think is a more accurate rating for this show since the foul words were being bleeped out in the TV-MA episodes) and closed captioning for the hearing impaired. Now those who are hearing impaired can enjoy South Park (at least they can enjoy the newer episodes this month for I am not sure if Comedy Central will close caption the older episodes or not when they are repeated again).
South Park now rated TV-14 and closed captioned.

Since SP is now Closed Captioned would anyone with a CC enabled TV care to tell us what Kenny says? Or does it come out as "Mmmm Mmmm mm mmm."?? -jasen!

BTW, some of the closed captions are wrong...so apparently CC doesn't provide the closed cap folks with the scripts. -Cake, pie, and Ice Cream is "cake pan and ice cream".
Also, watching SP with Closed caps turned on give a whole new enjoyment to it!

Is there always someone typing in what is said, or is there possibly a speech recognition program that interprets and displays the words?? Just seeing some of the spellings or word choices during some shows (live and taped), Ive had that thought... I am 99% sure that there is someone typing away, which is quite a feat for live telecasts, to get the spelling of names right and such. However, I did notice some grievous spelling errors in the SP CC'ing, which leads me to believe the CC'er is an older person out of touch with the lingo. For example, in "Pink Eye", when they call each other "chode" on a couple of occasions, it is close captioned as "toad". There are other examples which seem to indicate the typist is a little out of touch....

I just watched Damien with the CC on and there were some things in there that were completely wrong. There were some wrods and phrases that could never be interpretted from what was said to what was written. Hmmm, that doesn't sound right. For example, if Cartman was saying something like 'Your mom's a big bitch!' the CC would say something like 'Your mom's hjds!' or something similar.
I noticed that too but I attributed it to real time censoring. Is "choad" or "chode" considered a naughty word?
I have a newer TV with a closed captioning option, and I'll try it next time. However, I really doubt the person tying it in was informed of what Kenny is saying. The person will most likely just type (Kenny mumbles) or (as you suggested) "Mmmm Mmmm mm mmm."
The last time I watched South Park on Comedy Central before the Damien episode aired was during the New Year's marathon. At that time, closed captioning was still not available for the older South Park episodes.
It just says "mumbling".

Actually, the use of M's is a lot less accurate. That's the consonant you make when you're gagged. In actuality, Kenny's hood seems to reduce most of his speech to R's, V's, F's and B's. In fact, I think M's become V's through the hood.
I haven't analyzed this or anything.... though if a trained speech pathologist studied it carefully, they could come up with a reasonably accurate phoneme translation table.

For this reason, if you recorded the older episodes at a time when they didn't have captions, they will still not have captions when you rewatch the videos. Furthermore, if you wish to have the older episodes with the captions on tape, you will have to record them again now when they are being broadcast with captions.

they just say "Kenny mumbles" or just "mumbles". They don't show what he actually says.

Surely subtitling technology has advanced to the point were they can do that yeah?

I noticed the new rating, and though I thought the new episode was good, I couldn't help thinking it probably was toned down to get the new rating, which sucks. I hope CC doesn't pressure them to tone it down too much. If this shows looses any of it's edge its done for, since it certainly won' t be able to stand on it's great animation.

Maybe they rate on an episode by episode basis? I mean, I recall seeing another episode that wasn't rated TV-MA earlier in the season (I'd have to rewatch a few of the episodes to find which one it was). I guess we'll have to wait and see what we have next Wednesday...
