My final word on alt.tv.southpark.moderated

Well, I 've tried to keep up in this debate, but I think it's time to say my final piece and give up, because this is, well, pointless. There are those of us who want a moderated newsgroup, and many of you who are opposed are crying censorship and waste of bandwidth. First of all, it won't be a waste of bandwidth because it will probably end up being a rather high traffic group frequented by people who want to have a civilized conversation. And second of all, if you don't want a moderated newsgroup, then fine. Please somebody explain to me that how some of us creating our own newsgroup will affect you all who wish to stay here. I am failing to see how it will affect you. In regards to the censorship issue, I don't think we want it to be a censored newsgroup. We want a newsgroup where all messages will go through a moderater who will probably end up allowing about 90% of all posts to be posted. We just want to weed out spam, binaries and personal flaming, none of which have a place in a newsgroup of this sort. Some people think that all posts saying "I hated that episode" or "I was offended by suchandsuch" will be deleted. I agree that would be censorship, but I don't think that is what we want to do. If this were in the alt.fan hierarchy somebody could make a case as to deleting posts against a show, but not in the alt.tv hierarchy. A discussion is made more interesting by seeing both sides of the debate, so I imagine when somebody doesn't like a certain episode they will be able to post their opinions. The thing that we do want to get rid of is personal flames which are entirely off topic. That is unfair to the rest of us who are completely unaffected by that conversation. Continue such fights through email or one of the flame newsgroups if you have a personal problem with somebody or their opinions. There are also those opposed the moderated newsgroup who keep complaining that by generating this conversation about the moderated newsgroup, we ourselves are off topic. In newsgroups, discussing the newsgroup itself is considered on topic. Posts which are off topic which are products of discussion related to the show will probably be allowed, because at the heart of those issues, there is obviously some connection to the show. Thanks for letting me say my piece, and I hope maybe now some of you may understand why we see the necessity of a moderated newsgroup.

First of all, this thread would not even be close to being taken out of a moderated newsgroup. To suggest this proves that the people against the proposed group have no idea what is being suggested.

Everyone is complaining about censorship and violations of their freedom of speech. In a civilized society, rules are formed to prevent chaos. Rules are used protect your freedom. Is your freedom oppressed because there is a law against breaking into a home and taking whatever you want? How about expressing your freedom of speech by spray painting graffiti on your neighbor's car? How about the next time you go out to dinner, the waiter screams obscenities to your wife and children? Limits have to be set. Limits were set in this newsgroup and ignored.

How many of the following things would you rather have taken out of your newsgroup before you have to wade through them? 1. Make $500 with only 7.95!! 2. A 53 part binary of SOXMAS 3. A Nameless One post consisting entirely of "huh" 4. An ad for a craft show in Florida 5. The same post for a web page 5 times back to back 6. A chain letter 7. The entire Hello Kitty FAQ

Finally, are the people complaining against the moderated group the same that are telling people if they don't like SP, to change the channel?

Umm, hate to break it to you, son, but by this person using a killfilter we are losing our rights to speak to this person as well as our right to be listened to, which, as I stated before is no different than what we want with the moderated newsgroup, although people like you are having a lot of trouble understanding that on the moderated newsgroup we have no desire to delete 99% of the posts like you think.

You know, you people who are screaming "censorship" and claiming that the moderated newsgroup is reverting us to practices like Nazi Germany are sooo hypocritical. You bitch and moan about all that, and yet when I try to voice my opinion, you all just say that I have no reasoning ability just due to the fact that I use AOL. I really don't care what you think, because AOL does exactly what I need from an ISP, a little bit of Internet access (I use Netscape) email, and newsgroups, all which I am getting at a cheap price. I don't need any of the other hassle from another ISP, this one suits me fine for the time being.
