OT: 1337

Okay, I'm sick of seeing this "I'm so 1337" crap all over the web. Besides being yesteday's teen chat lingo, what does it mean? What is its origin? I think I remember something about "leet" -- whatever that means. But I can see how 1337 flipped upside down and backwards can look like "lEEt" if you write it a little differently from the way it appears typed. I think the origin has something to do w/ hacking. It's off-topic, but it seems that this group gets a nice mix of people of all ages and backgrounds....TIA

Thanks for the help. TIA is "stupid"? How so? I don't consider it slang at all, but an abbreviation that saves time typing. I type TIA not to be "1337" -- but to save time. Same for BTW, AFAIK, FOAD, etc. Time-savers.

Now, "1337" seems to be particularly stupid because it only saves one keystroke vs. "elite," and none at all vs. "cool" -- or do you prefer kEwL?
