South Park censorship is pointless

In the UK, it's shown after the 9pm watershed for sex, violence and swearing. Hell, it's shown at 10pm. If you wanted, you could flick to another channel and watch some Italian chicks gettin' it on, dubbed badly into English.

So why is it censored? And what's the point in censorship anyway? We all know what's being said. When someone says 'What the fbleepk is that?' we don't think 'I wonder what he said there.' We know perfectly well that the actor said 'What the fuck is that?' It's not as if we're being protected from evil influences that we don't know exist. It's just that some idiot is ruining the flow of the joke by obstructing it with a beep, and there really is no point! If South Park were a show for kiddies, then sure, bleep it - except it wouldn't have an politically incorrect language or concepts. Cartman wouldn't be fat, nobody would make fun of anybody else. Hell, it'd be like the Christmas play in the Christmas episode - just like all the other kid's TV.

If I turn the television on at 10pm and start flicking channels, I could expect to see some 'offensive' material. I don't care. I'm not close minded enough to be offended by swearing, or nudity, or one person accusing another person of being an 'ass rammer.' And I don't suppose many fragile, impressionable 8yr old children are going to be watching it, and if they are - well, they should be in bed and it's their damn parents fault. Besides, South Park's a lot less 'offensive' than some of the other shows on at that time.

Hell . . . it just strikes me that censorship has no point. I know perfectly well that 'Fbleepk you, you fbleebking fbleebker!' means 'Fuck you, you fucking fucker!' and I wouldn't care if I saw it on TV. And if you do care - you shouldn't be watching TV, or walking in the street, or talking to people, or listening to anything anyone says, because swearing and radically dangerous ideas are everywhere, so watch it - the next ten year old you see might have a shotgun hidden in his shorts, and seeing cartoon characters being violent might have flipped his little mind. Or he might say something satirical to you. Either way, you're sure to be offended.

Yes, bleeping when done with style, adds to the comedic effect I think. If just for the fact that supposedly its a couple of 8 year olds spewing these "forbidden" words forth from their supposedly innocent mouths. But like Bob pointed out in his post, bleeping just for the sake of censorship, as in protecting us adults from the evils of reality portrayed by a TV show, is pretty much useless now a days. Other than to protect little children, which parents should not let them watch IN THE FIRST PLACE if they so see fit, then whats the point?
