NEW YORK (March 13) - Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of checks - with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

I was just discussing this with a friend. I say either do it in the opening sequence of the next episode and then show his body thetans escape, or just recast him with someone completely different and distinctive (i.e. a Gilbert Gottfried or Bobcat Goldthwait) and make it seem like nothing happened.

I like it! After all, the disclaimer at the beginning of the show does say that voices are impersonated badly, or something to that effect.

Gilbert Gottfried...that could be a riot!

Damn straight! He didn't have a problem with the three trillion shots they've taken at Christianity and Judeism, but one direct shot at his religion and he bails? Oh fuck that and him!

While Chef has always been one of my favorite characters, I say good riddance to Isaac Hayes if he's going to get his panties in a bunch over SP's skewering of various religions after all these years. I'm firmly behind Matt Stone's comments on this. Where was Mr. Hayes' moral outrage when a gun toting Jesus was cavorting with Santa and Mr. Hankey? Or when they did the Joseph Smith (Dum dum dum dum dum) story? Or when the Super Best Friends took on David Blaine because he was trying to establish a tax-exempt religion that would compete with their own? I guess it's okay to make fun of others as long as your ox isn't being gored. I hope Matt and Trey find a way to address your hypocritical hissy fit in a future episode. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I think they should respect the Chef character and ignore the fact that the actor who plays him is flawed. Chef was about the only sane and good adult charter on the show. Let him go out that way.

They can't. The guy who does his voice left. To replace the voice actor and act like nothing happened would be a cheap trick and an insult to the viewers.

They can replace Chef with another sane, rational character. Who knows, maybe they'll come up with someone you like even more than Chef.

Oh yes they can. They created the Chef character. They own the rights to him. They can do anything they want with him. (Remember the death of Kenny? Refer to the DVD commentary on the same.)

Only to viewers who can't distinguish between Chef the character and Hayes the person.

I'm with you on this one. Personally I'd rather not see another voice actor replace Hayes. That would be the easy/obvious way out. SP's creators are not known for taking either.

Have something happen to Chef, causing him to either get laryngitis or become a mute. Once a new voice actor is found, Chef finds a miracle cure.

They already took the "sea-men in the stomach" route with Ms. Choksondik, so I don't know if that would work again.

OTOH, they could get a voice actor who sounds so different from Hayes that it would effectively be a jab at the former actor. It wouldn't be the same, but it could serve as a lasting tribute to Hayes' hypocrisy.

Isaac Asimov said, in his autobiography, that he, L. Ron Hubbard, and another Sci-Fi writer (Arthur C Clarke, I think) were pals from way back, until Hubbard started brainwashing young people. They tried to get him to stop but he wouldn't, and after that they wanted nothing to do with the jerk.

I don't know if he knew about that. He didn't mention anything about it in his bio. Where did you hear that, anyway?

Upon further reflection, maybe the best way to get rid of Chef is to hit him where he lives--have him slink out of town in shame and disgrace, scorned by all the women because he can't get it up any more.

When I first read it, I almost thought Isaac Hayes died.

But this is an even bigger bummer that I could have imagined.

Damn. Damn L. Ron Hubbard and his pseudo-religious cult for screwing up a good show like South Park!!

Scientology is hilarious. I'm surprised Issac is apart of all that. Didnt he think about that when he read the script for the episode? Chef got old anyway, Can't say I hate the character cause I got the sticker on one of my old skateboards. I wonder if he'll die from some bad salsbury steak or somethin.

I say having Chef and "Mrs." Garrison fall in love would be some sweeeeeet revenge. Every so often, Garrison could mention how Chef can't get enough of "her" sweet poontang. They could even show them together in all kinds of romantic situations as long as Chef doesn't have any lines.

The COS probably pressured Hayes into quitting the show previous to the new season being aired soon. It's too bad- Chef added a lot to the show but they'll be able to easily replace him or just get along without. Actually I'm surprised Hayes didn't quit right after "Trapped in the Closet".

One Dish Bourbon Chicken Submitted by: Penelope P.

This is a superb, easy dish. The slight sweetness of the bourbon mixes deliciously with the garlic and onion. Serve with rice, if desired. The sauce goes wonderfully with rice or pasta. Servings: 4

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1 onion, chopped 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 2 tablespoons chicken stock 2 tablespoons bourbon salt and pepper to taste

Directions: 1. In a large skillet, melt butter or margarine and add olive oil. Saute garlic and onion until translucent. Remove garlic and onion from skillet with a slotted spoon. 2. Add chicken breast halves to skillet and brown on both sides. Return garlic and onion to skillet. Add broth and bourbon and stir all together. Cover and let simmer over very low heat for 20 to 25 minutes, or until chicken is tender and done (chicken juices run clear).

So Say We All, Dale The world wide web at my finger tips and I can't find anything interesting.

South Park still makes me laugh... like, once or twice an episode. It was a lot funnier when Stone and Parker weren't trying to be topical, and were free-forming. Like, whatever happened to things like hitting the high "F"? Loverboy's "Pig And Elephant DNA Just Won't Splice!"? Worcestershire sauce used as embalming fluid? The "Brown Note"? Or best of all... Chef's "I'm gonna make love to ya, woman / Gonna lay you down by the fire ..."

They still do some funny work, but it's not their "ripped straight from the headlines" eps.

"One thing about Matt and Trey, they lampoon everyone. And if you take that shit seriously, I'll sell you the Brooklyn Bridge for $2."

Fuck him. He sure as hell did not mind calling white people crackers. I guess the line is only drawn where it concerns his beleifs. Nothing worse than a racist nigger. Evidentaly south park wanted him to say something about scientologists. That is crossing the line . "The Hebrew Hammer" wrote in message news:[email]...
