Does anyone have yesterday's USA Today? If so, look in the Life section for an interview with MPAA CEO Jack Valenti. He admits the MPAA's decision to rate BLU R-17 was wrong.

USA Today subscribers: Check yesterday's edition. Perhaps someone might like to transcribe it so we can all read it? I think the headline is, "South Park: Bigger, Longer and very nearly NC-17."

Well, did we need any more proof that Valenti and the MPAA are fuckwits?

Honestly, I don't think the movie deserved NC-17.  There wasn't even any sex in
the movie!

The MPAA is the American equivalent of the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC operates a slightly different regime. There are five ratings that can be assigned to films screened in cinemas (six for video releases). These are:

  U   - Universal - suitable for all
  Uc  - Universal - especially suitable for young or pre-school
        children (video releases only)
  PG  - Parental guidance - General viewing, but some scenes may
        be unsuitable for young children
  12  - Suitable only for persons of twelve years and over
        (cinema releases only)
  15  - Suitable only for persons of fifteen years and over

  18R - Restricted '18' - To be supplied only in licensed sex

It's a case of Valenti, who's taken some really big hits lately both from Trey & Matt and then over the insertion of CGI figures into "Eyes Wide Shut" to block an orgy scene, firing back at Trey & Matt for making him look foolish. However, it's not going to work. My suspicion is that the ratings system is going to collapse of its own accord very soon; I hope that it's not replaced by some sort of governmental control of the content of films.
