I know this is kinda goonie, but I still have to mention it. My mom and I used to watch those international spelling bees on tv (the show em on espn or cnn or something) and there was this spazz girl on there. I can't recall her name. Always shouted her letters into the mike, always covered her mouth between letters...Matt and Trey must be very observant...cause that little girl Rebecca was EXACTLY the same. I died laughing the second time I watched cause it kind of confirmed my suspicions.

yeah...i'm convinced that there's a kid like that in EVERY spelling bee. they always seem to get second place for some reason. <g>

I remember this chick too! She was a total spaz and I believe she was also homeschooled (hmmmm....just like the kids in this weeks ep). We had the spelling bee on tv in the background during work and whenever that spaz came on everyone stopped working just to watch and laugh.

Yesyesyes!! She's based on that girl..I think she's even supposed to be that girl!! There was this home-schooled spazzy girl in the National Spelling Bee one year, and her name was Rebecca. I know this girl was on the Rosie O'Donnell show, too. Myself being someone who watches those spelling bees on tv, and also being someone who competed in them, this episode was extremely funny for me, 'cause I've seen kids act like that in real life (over-questioning the pronouncer person dude with weirdass questions and all).

I thought the name was close too! Thanks for making me feel not crazy...heh

i don't recall her name, but i do remember seeing her on rosie, now that you mention it. she was annoying as crap.

Alright, ladies and gents. The girl you've all been commenting on is one Rebecca Sealfon, 1997 spelling bee champion from Brooklyn, N.Y. Everything shown about the 7-year old Rebecca on the episode was true about the 13-year old who won the Scripps Howard spelling bee two years ago (she's 16 now). She did whisper each letter into her hands before saying it aloud, and she was nervous enough to have her voice quiver. In the final round, she didn't use her hands. In the fall of 1997, she entered Stuyvesant High School, so she's no longer home-schooled. She said in an ABC interview that she whispered the letters into her hand to help her focus on the word in question.

"Euonym." Is that "eu" as in good? (Yes.) Is that "onym" as in name? Euonym! Yay! [she still has to spell it] E U O N Y M. Euonym! Woohoo!

    Did anyone think she somehow had the answers written on her hands?  She
kept looking down at her hands and said each letter quietly before she said
them into the mic.  Or it could just be a little quirk of hers.  Thanx

No she wouldn't have the answers on her hands, because the contestants don't know what the words are beforehand.

Actually, putting your hand over your mouth and breathing each syllable, or the entire word, into it is a technique they can use to help them come up with the correct spelling.

It was a quirk...that Nat'l Spelling Bee chick does that... And she screams out each letter, backs away, puts her hands over her mouth and repeats...its WIERD.

I'm not too sure...my mom got a KICK out of the episode tho...being that she was the one watching the national spelling bees and all...

Heh, my mom did too!! (which was surprising, since she's usually anti-SP). She accidentally taped it on her tape (which was left in my VCR--I have it auto-set to tape Wednesday nites at 10 on CC :)) and she watched it out of curiousity, and she found it hilarious. She also remembered that girl, and she definitely caught on to the parody of her. :)
