DON'T HELP AOLers

I'm getting tired of people on AOL asking other people to do something for them because they don't want to find out themselves how to do it.

Its not the fact that you need help actually. But look here what you wrote. From my point of you, it makes you look more like an asshole, than ignorant. Usually, I try to help the ignorant out. Assholes are just more fun to make fun of.

Letters like this are getting really annoying. What difference does it make what server a person uses? What if people wrote "Say no to Earthlinkers" (or any other for that matter)? It makes absolutely no difference.

As for not helping people who ask for advice, rather than chastise them for asking, just tell tham that this is not the correct forum for those types of questions.

Yes, indeed they are.

Actually, more than you'd think. At the moment, AOL's newsreader breaks spec in more than one way (I can only remember two, off the top of my head). There have been incidents in the past with ix.netcom.com and THEIR default software, and so on. The ISP (not "server") provides crappy software to many people who don't know enough to change it. That's going to cause problems. Most people, however, see the symptom and not the cause, which causes anti-ISP-user sentiment, rather than anti-ISP (the pople who should, in theory, KNOW BETTER) sentiment.

And, quite often, get back "HAY FUCK YOU, I CAN ASK WHAT EVER I WANT! FREEDOM OF SPEACH!!!". People don't want to LEARN, y'see, they want the answers. <shrug>

What do AOL people ask for? I'm on AOL, and I'm certainly not proud of it. I know that AOL sucks, and I actually enjoy people telling me that. What's up with AOLers anyway? They can never do anyhting right. I'm not saying that EVERYone on AOL is an idiot...just a vast majority.....

It's probably mostly because AOL has sent a gazillion of its installation disks to a "vast majority" of computer owners, and because it so blithely misleads the most gullible idiots about what it is, so they choose it more frequently than any other ISP. And since more & more idiots are becoming computer owners every day, it *looks* like AOLers are genetically stupid.

But they're not; they're just a massive subset of *all* computer owners, more & more of whom are now grade-A registered idiots. Meanwhile the AOL marketing blitz dupes thousands into thinking that AOL *is* the Internet, into thinking that everybody else on the Net also diddles endlessly with "screen names," etc., and into thinking that the Internet is just one big fucking order desk ("Hey man send me some pictures!"). It may therefore be the most *attractive* ISP for idiots, but it doesn't *infuse* idiocy into all its users. Just looks that way -- especially on the TV-oriented newsgroups.

Probably over half of all AOL users are are oblivious to the wide variation in ISPs, and that'll get worse before it gets better, but the point is: it's not the AOL users' faults -- the fault really belongs to AOL itself, which has continuously implied to the unwashed masses that AOL is the only choice they have.

I have AOL and it serves its purposes for which i use it. Unfortunately, unlike you, i was not born a cyber geek and dont know all the information yet. People ask questions because they dont know the answers, NOT to piss off assholes who dont necessarily need to read the question and answer it. If you dont want to help AOLers then dont thats your choice but leave everyone else out of it.

P.S. Not all AOLers are idiots, grow up and act like an adult!

Thank you, thank you! Finally someone seems to understand that ALL people that use AOL, me for example, are necessarily "stupid, naive morons whose only knowledge of computers is the on-button". It took me a long time, but I learned how to do things by asking singular people, not entire mailing lists. The reason I like AOL is because many of my friends who have moved away have it, so I can talk with them much quicker and more conviently than e-mail. The reason I hate AOL is the vast numbers of morons that use it. So Please, please, please, do not stereotype all AOL users as idiots! (just about 90% of them... :)

.............................................................. First of all, this Monkytwo has obviously been on the 'net' for over a year. One would think that he/she would have more manners by now. True, new internet users can act like dumb-asses but remember, we were all new once.

AOL seems to have more that their share of 'clueless users' - probably because of the marketing blitz, AOL gets a lot of first timers. We should gently guide them into coolness with advice, not flames. If a new user has only been on the net for a month or two, how do they know that a topic was discussed extensively 6 months ago? FAQ's are often hard to locate even if you look for one.

If someone posts a binary to a discussion group (I did that once, not realizing my mistake and got my ass kicked), they should be educated not castrated. First time forgiveness . . . do it again, then let the ass-kicking begin!

Then do not post to not help AOLers or Ban AOLers because that is the whole community. Some of us are educated and can find the proper ways of doing things. Some people on here are children (did anyone think of that). Maybe they don't know any better.

I beg your pardon. When I was 11 years old or so I was already on the local BBS' scene and learned my netiqette there. I also learned that I get loads of fun out of flaming people, but that is beside the point. I knew before I had any formal education that if you're going to respond to something make it worth reading and that if you're going to start something new, stick it in the right place. Blaming it on children is definately just as bad as blaming it on AOL. In fact I would say it is worse.

AOL Babies their users and doesn't give them an enviorment where they wouled even want to learn (or have to for that matter). AOL's interface is a made to serve the customer and the customer seems to think that applies to everyone on the internet (or aol for that matter). The pop culture of the world has everything thinking that they should get things their way under all conditions. That is what is causing the problem. Its not the fact that people are young or uneducated...its the fact that AOL does nothing at all to solve this problem. All they do is make it worse in an effort to "please the customer".

Yes there are intelligent people on AOL. And it is undenable that the percentage of morons on AOL is greater than the average ISP. With an ISP you need to usually at least learn something before you can do stuff. AOL removed that road block. So, without further adu...I'll shut up.

Unfortunately in it's infancy aol made no mention of netiquette or new users groups. AOL'rs would go into a room on physics and ask where to get porno's. This would be followed by the fully quoted original physics post with another fifty aol posts stating: <aol> Me too </aol> Many posts sending out Chain letters and get rich quick scams were generated from aol. Other sites would cut off access for this to its errant members. For years aol did nothing. Hence you get to live down it's reputation. If ya wana be pissed about aol net perception the first I'd point you to is aol. Which now does a much better job.

Actually, I learned in a trial by fire. Whenever I fucked up, I got flammed to hell and back and learned not to do it again. I've found that to be quite a good way to weed out the unwanted. They either do one of three things: 1) Never come back (fine by me). 2) Learn and never do it again 3) Get stupid and then everyone gangs up on them.

Nope, but by my math, even if AOL has 500,000 idiots, that still equals a smaller percentage than my regular ISP which only has 500 users. They've got more than the 40 or so users that would equal that percentage. Sure AOL has more idiots...it's got 4,000 or so times the number of users.

Correction, AOL does automatically subscribe new users to this group, as well as five other help oriented newsgroups. Therefore, an "AOLer" has the opportunity to learn and discover on their own in proper forums. If they choose not to, then it is the fault of the individual, not AOL.

aol is coming out with new software this fall wherein the buttons will change on the menus depending on whether or not t'is mornin, noon, or night. Their marketing surveys, as reported by CNN indicate the majority of users leave because they find the interface to complex. Hence they plan to make it more like watching TV.
