I think having Wendy (playing the virgin Mary) giving birth to Jesus in the begining was going way to far. I love South Park (its my favorite show and the only show on TV I watch now that Duckman is gone) , but that part was just to offensive for me and half my friends watching the showwith me. I hope they never do anything like that again.
but that's how life begins! yes, we don't associate the pains of labor with the birth of Christ but i'm sure their was some discomfort. i remember a few years ago getting a christmas card with the "very pregnant" virgin mary standing outside of a motel with the no vacancy sign lit! it took me back at the moment but once i thought about it - it was funny.
i happen to disagree. when cartman dressed up like hitler, myself and my friends, a bunch of jews, thought it was hilarious. it's just a t.v. show, it's just a joke, get over it.
what kind of sick person would hold the baby jesus fetus upside down? sick sick sick. :-)
I guess you don't understand the social commentary in South Park. While they do make this commentary somewhat at the expense of certain minority groups, religious sects, etc., their message in the end always has to do with accepting people's differences, you know, tolerance?!? What they basically do is have characters that represent actual people and roles in society. Usually what happens is a very ignorant person (Mr. Garrison) says something very ignorant about a religious group or minority (Mexicans, Gays), but what they are pointing out is that people that think like that (out loud) are complete assholes. Especially when they are exposing young children to these attitudes. Cartman is an example of children that end up thinking like that (notice Cartman's mom is a Christian and always accepts his ignoant comments about Jews, Black, and gays). Stan (for instance, in Big Gay Al's Boat Ride) actually learns to accept people with different (not white and Christian) lifestyles and attitudes.
What's funny here is that you are perfectly representing one of the groups in the crowd that was fighting over the representation of Xmas in South Park. They get all up in arms about what offends them (even if it has to do with a silly idea of a bearded white guy in the sky) while remaining completely ignorant to what is offending others. Did you noticed the moral of the story?
Mr. Hanky was showing us that we are all the same in the (rear) end.
2. The Christmas play represented what the world would be like if we just got rid of all the cultural differences that make the human race diverse and wonderful. Everybody was so stuck on their own views that instead of trying to represent everyone's religion/race/whatever and celebrating diversity, they just got rid of it all. And the only thing left that was similar was SHIT (Mr. Hanky).
Anyway, this is why I was so amused (yet still disheartened) when you said that the Cherry Mary thing was going to far.
If it was a troll, eat me. I'm still glad I wrote this because there are tons of people that think like that.
AMEN brother!! And i even thought Wendy's labor pains sounded real!! of
course i aint heard to many labor pains in my little old life, and when i
do, ill bet they arent coming from some barn. I couldnt agree with you
more here Wayne. The whole point of this episode was for people to just
ditch that particular frame of thinking, "this is what is right for me so
it is what is right for everyone else in the world" which is a very
similar mental pattern to many famous and influential people in history,
like Adolf Hitler, or like those loveable KKK members, and the whole "kill
the heretic" mentality of the 0th century
The point is not to get pissed off just because something you see on tv
doesnt fall into your guidelines of what is "right" "moral" or whatever the
hell you want to call it, and to just enjoy the show. so enjoy it, cuz it
aint gonna change.
LB
Well, what I think, basically...is that...mpphhh hmorrhmm hmmmmh mmm
anyway...to be honest, I was offended by the birth of jesus the first tiem I saw it...then it grew on me...
what people don't realize is that Matt and Trey and following the number1 guideline if you want to make it in america...offend someone.
Southpark has made fun/expressed opinins about religion, homosexuality, race, poverty, sex with animals, profanity from kids, violence, etc...and when one group or such bitches or complains, what does that do?... It sparks more interest in the show, which results in the show getting more popular...The more people bitch, the greater SouthPark gets.
If you watch it with a frame of mind that anything can and will happen...then you won't be offended AND you'll actually enjoy it more.
And jsut to show a point...the birth of Jesus didn't "offend" me near as much as Cartman pleasding to God and then saying "my god has forsaken me", which is what Christ said just moments before he died (well, actually, he said, "My God, why has thou forsaken me")...but thats another story for another newsgroup...
Just kick back and enjoy thr humor...and make cookies...
Actually, Jesus didn't say "why have you forsaken me", he said "Eli, Eli, lamah Sabachtani" which is not Hebrew, but Mayan, meaning "Now, now, I am fainting; darkness covers my face".
It depends on the gospel you are referencing. Plus which it's pointless to transliterate from things with different "alphabets", much less something that wasn't really written.

Sorry. That's Tibetan, not Mayan. Unless, of course, you belive that the Mayans spoke Tibetan. No one has a clue what spoken Mayan sounded like. They wrote in glyphs rather than an alphabet.
In my English class senior year, (I swear this is true) my teacher told us that there was a new theory that while Jesus actually did say, "why have you forsaken me", this was actually a code phrase he had set up with the apostles earlier, and that it really meant, "We'll meet up in the sepulcher on Sunday."
My English teacher told us that she doesn't read male authors. You can't always believe everything you hear. They tell you a lot of shit in school that isn't true, you have to learn to pick the fact from the bullshit and political agenda. And a note to TAO. There was another point where Jesus supposedly said "Father, Father" He actually said, "Daddy, Daddy." in the original text. Little trivia question there.
Kyle WAS joeseph, but I noticed the same thing. Kyle could have played anyone BUT baby jesus fetus and he still would have been playing a jew (Except maybe the wisemen, i don't think they were jewish).
Yeah, that's what even my Jewish friends pointed out -- they asked why couldn't Kyle play Joseph????
Despite being a Christian, I'm not offended at all by Jesus' appearances in the show. He makes some good points with what he says, and all in all is treated pretty nicely in the script! His birthday party made a good point, actually -- the "birthday boy" was getting ignored on his big day (loved the "Last Supper-like" table on the Jesus and Pals set, btw). It was similar to a film on SNL that showed Jesus being disappointed that most people on TV were forgetting the main point of Christmas.
I think that was the *point* of the satire--that some people have gotten so caught up in all-inclusiveness, they miss even the most academic points. I think that's probably why the line has Kyle's mom saying "Joseph of Arimithea" rather than just "Joseph" -- to telegraph the point that Joseph *was* Jewish.
The funny part to me is that Joseph of Aramithea was not Mary's husband. He was the man who supposedly took Jesus' body when it was removed from the cross, dressed it and donated a tomb for the burial.
Yes, *I* know it was the point. Every year, the holidays become more and more politically correct. It was a shock to my non-SP-fan friends that the episode ridiculed the PC-ness of the holidays so clearly. (It's almost a relief when it gets to "Happy New Year" -- something you can say without fear of offending someone.)
I especially appreciated the addition of the "tree-huggers" who objected to the cutting down of Christmas trees.
I really loved the fact that the christmas special took shots at all of this political corectness surrounding christmas and offending people. Its gotten to a point where people need to lighten up a bit and South Park did a great job at pointing that out. The Christmas play was my favorite part, with minimalist composer whatever his name was putting on a new age, non offensive, holiday musical. God bless south park for going out of their way to make fun of policital corectness. This posting really has no point, but I felt like saying something!

Not any more. ;) it was in the paper today that secular new years celebrations have been banned in Chechnya because they're a Russian/Western rather than an Islamic tradition.
That was an error. The writers apparently confused Joseph, the husband of Mary, who was present during the birth of Jesus, with Joseph of Arimathea, who is mentioned only once in the Bible (Matthew 27:57) as the person who donated his tomb for Jesus to be buried in.
(You could also argue that Kyle's mom was being depicted as ignorant about Christianity.)
A legend also grew that Joseph of Arimathea was the first custodian of the Holy Grail.
Monty Python could have a lot to do with this. Undoubtedly the creators of South Park saw that movie. Perhaps they remembered the scene where Brother Maynard translated the inscription on the cave wall and exclaimed, "It's signed Joseph of Arimathea!" A person not fully familiar with the Bible might incorrectly assume that this was the full name of the more familiar Joseph, husband of Mary.
At any rate, those who are keeping track of errors, such a "CHEF" appearing in upper and lower case, can add this to the list.
its like that Talking Heads song, "Nothing But Flowers". He talks about what the world would be like if we got rid of all the tvs and microwaves and makes it very sarcastic!!!
BTW, very good point. I always wanted to say something like that but it never came out right :)

Hell, I thought it was funny. No, I am not a sadistic Satan worshipper, I really don't have a religion. But many of my friends are Christians, Catholics, Jews, Jehova's Witnesses, and yes one Marilyn Manson worshipper. We all think South Park is a kick ass show, and noone is ever offended. Even at the most religiously offensive jokes, at the most vulgar language, we all think it is funny. We all know there has been stuff on there to offend practically everyone, however, My friends and I, our whole school, and even our whole city, get along with it. We look at South Park for what it is. A show about four little adorable kids, the adventures they have, and the humor.
Goodness, Edwina, you're slipping. I mean, a completely unknown person beats you to posting about being offended? Better beef up on those typing skills. Merry Christmas, etc...
You have to remember, that's just the way South Park is. If it weren't, it just wouldn't be the coolest, funniest show on TV right now. I mean come on, don't you think the Jewish religion gets offended, don't you think some parents in general get offended that kids could be watching??? I don't believe in any kind of religion, so I'm sorry it offended you.
But there was that one line where Mr. Garrison asks the mayor if they can get rid of all the mexicans! I'm mexican, and it didn't offend me! I laughed!!! They just make fun of whatever they want to, and that's what makes the show so unique.
Yes! I loved this line, too-- but I have one question: Is it just me, or did the mayor's inflection on her response imply that this was a question that Mr. Garrison asks often?
Have offically changed my mind. I must admit that the first time I watched it I was offended, but the second and third time I watched it I laughed my head off. I have always loved south park and I have decided to never post another letter saying I was offended again. I hope all you other loyal fans will forgive me.
I'm as Christian as the next guy, and I still enjoy SP. I don't take the religious stuff seriously, and anyway, SP isn't the first TV show to poke fun at religion. How about the God who'd "rather be sitting home and watching football on Sundays" on the Simpsons? (And I still like that show too)
It's like this: Some of SP is not for everybody. If you don't like one thing, ignore it and wait, because something cool will be coming up next.
Yes I agree. I kept hoping stan would mount her leg or something.

Do you not see the complete humor in all this. The principal came and was upset at the nativity, not the fact that a third grader was lying on her back spread eagle in front of a boy faining childbirth.
Have to disaggree with you, that is what South Park is all about! Pissing and affending the fuck out of people. While it _IS_ insensitive and outright shitty, it is what the show is all about.
To quote some guy named Garrison, "how do you think it happened in those days?" Did women miraculously have babies with no pain? Better bring in those Christian Coalition dudes to mess with the show now. If you don't want to be offended, what the hell are you doing watching the show anyways?
Sorry it was offensive to you, but that's South Park. Think about it. Third graders having to show childbirth in a school play? I thought is was funny, plus the fact that the "fetus", as Mr. Garrison called it, sorta looked like Starvin Marvin. The whole show was great..this is going to a tough call between this episode and "Starvin Marvin".
Oh please, You telling me a little piece of shit that talks is ok, but a girl pretending to give birth is way too far? Whats up with that? You think that Mary didn't have any pain when giving birth? You must be kidding, That was one of the funniest parts.
And what about the baby eating Mr. Hanky in the commercial? That seemed to be more offensive than having a girl give birth. I couldn't believe they showed that. It was hilarious!
Wendy giving birth, Mr. Hanky and the baby eating Mr. Hanky were all shameful and disgusting. I'm taping it when it's on again tonight so we can watch it over and over, pointing out to people how disgusting it is. Hi-dee Ho,
Bob A "Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

Personally that was my favorite part of the show.
What _REALLY_ offended me was that crack about the plastic lids on coffee cups. <insert explicitive here> What about Clumsy People? We need those lids to keep from getting third degree burns weather or not we are in a car. South Park was completely inseisitive to clumsy people and I will BOYCOTT all their advertisers. Since I never bought Magic[tm] the Gathering cards, I will have to set people who do buy those on fire. And Unfortunately I will have to boycott the Mr. Hanky Construction Kit. Darnit! That was the perfect Yule gift. I was going to give it to all my friends for Yule (yes Yule, not X-mas or Chunukka). Now because of SP being insensitive to Clumbsy People I gotta boycott them :(
theyre mocking the lady that spilled a coffee on herself and sued mcdonalds
in case you didnt hear about about 3 years ago some lady got a coffee at mickeyD's and spilled it on lap when she was driving she then went to the hospital and claimed to have third degree burns on her legs and other unmentionable parts she pointed the finger at mcdonalds because there was no warning on the cup saying the coffee was hot (now why exactly wouldnt it be hot?)
she sued for millions of dollars and she won that is why there are reminders on all hot beverages at mcdonalds saying WARNING CONTENTS ARE SERVED EXTREMELY HOT

Um, not to be pendulumantic or anything, but they were putting WARNING CONTENTS ARE SERVED EXTREMELY HOT on their Hot Apple Pies since I was a kid, and that was in the late '70s, and back then they had sold 24 billion hamburgers instead of a whole Sagan of burgers.
Back then, Steely Dan ruled the highways, and Hanson wasn't even a gleam in their daddy's (David Hasselhof) eye yet. Back then you could wear a bicentennial belt buckle and a t-shirt with iron on letters and you would be too cool for school. Back then people didn't sue for arbitrary reasons, and if they were mad at a company like McDOnald's they just formed a cult and robbed banks like Patty Hearst until they got what they wanted.
So, Mister Rizzo, I think you may have been the victim of an Urchin Legend, which is one of those stories you hear from a 'Friend of a Friend', or starts out 'This ain't no shit but...' Sorry, Rick, but the McDonalds case was well publicized. If I remember right the jury awarded the women either7 or 17 MILLION dollars. Not a bad payoff for being stupid enough to try to sugar your coffee while driving...eh?
Uh... Dickie... I hate to break it to you, but this was a HUGE news story, and it's absolutely true. Anyone who says otherwise is absolutely full of shit. Really. Wait. In a few weeks (I'm going on vacation, so I can't do it sooner), I'll cite some sources for you, if someone doesn't do it for me before then.
If you have an, "offensiveness tolerance line" that can be crossed, then South Park is really not the show for you. Rest assured they will cross, scuff their feet on, and shit on that line until you either lose the line or stop watching.
SP is for those of us who think Sacred Cows make the best hamburgers.
Lemme explain the brilliance of the satire behind the Xmas show to those of you who don't get it, namely the original poster of this thread, who will hereafter be referred to as "Kyle's Mom".
The genius behind the Christmas episode is this: by removing all elements from the school play that were offensive to different special interest groups, they created a non-offensive play. Ironically, it offended everybody because it was so fucking awful. It's called social commentary, and, as has been demonstrated by Kyle's Mom, it hits the nail square on the head.
If the show offends you, then stop watching it. But as in the Christmas episode, don't bitch and moan until you ruin it for the rest of us. Bitch!
i dont see why people who are offended by the show keeping watching it
could someone please post or mail me why this seems to be i cant understand why someone would keeping watching something they think is a bunch of bullshit
BTW im really starting to be impressed by some of new faces in here keep up the good work peeps
Did anyone catch the Peanuts reference? It was in the beginning, when the children went out to catch snowflakes on their tongues. There was all this happy piano music and the animation also carried that wholesome Charles M. Schultz type of feeling.
Fucking brilliant. Also, does anyone know who might be posting any images of Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo on the web? (Christmas gifts, you know ...)

Not a flame, just a tip. The Christmas episode came out on the 18th. Your post was from the 22nd. A five day gap in pointing out a Charlie Brown reference is a bit much.
