First off, why do Simpsons fans feel so threatened by South Park? Reapeat after me: Simpsons-air-on-Sunday. (inhale) South-Park-airs-three-days-later. (exhale) There-is-no-conflict. (repeat as neccesary).

But, if we must make a pissing contest out of this: I've watched the Simpsons since they were squibs on the Tracy Ullman show. They used to have comic timing, character depth, and lasting wit. After the "Singing Simpsons" and "Bart Carney" atrocities of this year, I can see why Simpsons fans would feel the need to rag on every stumble of some other show.

South Park stumbles a lot, and on average, it probably isn't as good as the Simpsons were "back in the day". BUT SP has its moments of genius -- and I've finally stopped expecting that from the Simpsons. OFF has been beat into the ground by writers who can't think of anything new to do with the same characters -- and after so many yrs, that's no surprise. Like Bilbo Baggins in _the Fellowship of the Ring_, they've gotten old though they do not outwardly age, they're "spread thin -- like too little butter over too much toast". (paraphrased)

SP is better than OFF like Kasparov is better than Fischer, a new car is better than a used car of the same model, or a fresh Coke is better than a day-old Coke.

Will SP be around 10 years down the line? Maybe. I actually see the fact that the creators _aren't_ fixated on one set of characters as a good thing. 10 years of Cheesie poof lines and killing Kenny gags would demote SP to Galavision. Let the show play a little. I wanted to find out who Cartman's father was too (my guess is Chef, because he's the closest to Eric's endomorphic shape). Still, I'm glad to see the show hasn't become fixed in such a rigid format that it's like watching a televised version of "Laughter's the Best Medicine" from Reader's Digest. I wish I could say the same about all my old favorite shows.

Simpsons air almost every day except for Saturday. South Park Airs on Monday at 12 AM ET and Saturday and Wednesday at 10 PM and 12 AM ET

Not threatened, just annoyed. If OFF newsgroup was free of immature, insight-less posts from SP bandwagon jumpers (not necessarily you, by the way), I could see your point. But I as much as anyone enjoy SP, on a base, teenager revisited type way. If I laugh, I laugh. But you have to admit, the Simpsons team NEVER insulted it's audience like last night.

Sorry bout that. If you don't see the moments of genius in the current OFF, that's you. But even worthless drivel like Urkel and Mad About You have MOMENTS.

Like Country music, the more a one-dimensional concept like SP evolves, the less it is what it is. That's why OFF is better. Even at it's worst, (I agree with your examples), it's deeper,more ascerbic, and doesn't pick on easy targets like Celine Dion and Kathy Lee Gifford.
