I happened to like the show. Pathetic that Glick is getting renewed and TMB is not. But, I guess the costs were too high for TMB.
OT: That's My Bush cancelled

I loved "That's My Bush!" I can't believe they're cancelling. I don't really care for Glick either, or Battlebots, or Sports Talk or Win Ben Stein's Money or any other show except for South Park and the Daily Show. In fact, if you think about it, Comedy Central really sucks except for those shows.

Yep. I even went to SF last May to watch the BattleBots tournement. It was much better in person than it is on TV. And this season's editting of the show really suck, too.

I don't know. I've never found Battlebots to be much of a comedy so I don't see how in God's name it fits on Comedy Central. As for Win Ben Stein's Money, that still wasn't nowhere near as funny as TMB but that girl sure is hot (not as hot as that Mariah something from TDS).

Ah, you've figured out the reason I watch the show!
You mean the one who needs to eat the 2nd half of her sandwich for lunch? Too skinny for my taste.

To each his own, of course, but it is possible to be too thin.

I only hope I can be on WBSM again while Nancy is the co-host...

Yeah, May 21, 1998 when Jimmy Kimmell was co-host. They taped it in February '98. There was this little woman next to me who had a faster finger. I set her up with the question about Fellini and never recovered. But by final round she only had $400.

The premise was just too stupid. Sorry. It might have made a funny 5 minute SNL sketch, but a series? Come on...can you really believe this woman's life was *completely* on hold for 20+ years? That she just sat in a jail cell the whole time? Seriously, it was Rip Van Winkle without the being asleep part...and it just didn't work.

You have to suspend your disbelief and take it as it was: an after school special parody. I thought it worked great.
Is South park realistic?
I like fantasy in my viewing, I'm sick of everyone trying to be "real". I want out there kooky television.
Bernie
But it weren't kooky enough! It's like they couldn't decide what it was going to be, or something.
"Bernie" wrote in message news:[email]...
Exactly what I meant, the premise too outlandish to suspend my disbelief.
The problem with SWC is the idea of her being in jail for how long was it? 20 something years? For what? Why didn't she finish her high school degree in prison? She certainly wasn't frozen or anything that exotic. I'd be able to suspend my disbelief for a 5 minute sketch, but not a whole series.
I rarely thought about Jerri's character's background after a couple episodes. Just thought of her as a really old dingbat student who used to be a junkie whore. Anyone who's been in a college of any size knows the "adult" student...not that they're junkie whores, but I got used to the idea of an older student pretty quickly.
Assorted offenses involving drugs, prostitution, theft, etc. Perhaps more.
She was a junkie whore who didn't even decide to turn her life around until after prison. It is hinted at that she was pretty well "adapted" to stereotypical rough prison life...

The deal is there are a lot of people --like me, for instance-- who never found TMB funny. First of all, we don't think it's funny that there's a "real" dumbf**k in the White House to begin with. So, trying to find the humor in a parody of a loser without a brain is a stretch. You'd have to go back to the Wizard of Oz to see how that's done. Try to imagine a sit-com in Bosnia parodying Slobodan Milosevic after the massacres. Yeah...wow, like that's too totally kooky!
Secondly, the show just wasn't funny anyway. The writing was marginal, and every bit was stolen from every sit-com that ever existed. Not surprisingly, "I Love Lucy" did it way better.
I like fantasy in my viewing, too, which is why I gave up on TMB after the first ep. That ain't fantasy. In fact, it's so close to reality it's hard to tell the difference. Frying Jennifer Lopez with a magnifying glass is fantasy.
Scuze me while I go stare into Vladimir Putin's soul.

Funny is a subjective term. The fact that so much was stolen from other sitcoms *was the point of the show*.

You seem to have missed that the show was supposed to be a parody of those insipid ABC Afterschool Specials they used to air.`
No, it just didn't work most of the time. Her father was kind of funny, being stuck in the wild postures and even driving all the time (what WAS he supposed to beabout??), but that stupid ep with the guy's face peeled off way way too forced. It never went far enough to really fulfill its promises. Hence, LAME.
It takes all types, I suppose. I was/am a huge fan of SWC, and I always considered the "stuck" father to be the lamest joke on the show. I was really glad when they killed off his character so I wouldn't have to see that "joke" again.
Again, it takes all types. imo, that was one of the best episodes, if not the best. It helps to have seen many previous episodes so all that ultra-sappy drama music & acting (especially the romance between Stephen Colbert's character & Jellyneck) would be that much funnier.
But what got me was that he actually would change positions. So what was he all about? Was he on kurari or something? Was he just on so much acid that everything was "wowing" him? At first I thought he was dead.
I agree, but the show never really lived up to its potential! The one with the retarded kid was close, though.
I guess "humor about lame humor" doesn't work for me unless you give it a hook. Schtick is schtill schtick. Vonce you schtick zomebody vith ze schtick, ze schtick vill come out unless it hass a barb on it.
I think he was a spoof of the unnecessary yet necessary character...
heh heh, a good one for sure.

Umm, I thought the father was ALREADY dead. THAT'S why he never moved or reacted to anything.
No, he wasn't, because he actually did stuff -- just off camera.
Oh... so you were the ONE fan they kept talking about! ;)
Nothing personal dude, I just never got that show. I also never understood what demographic CC was targeting with it?
I also loved SWC. It was a bit off the wall at first, but then I got into its rhythm. The humor is hard to explain, and if you don't think it was funny, no amount of explaining is going to convince you otherwise, probably. I'm not saying it was sophisticated humor, but just hard to explain to someone who does not think it's funny. A lot of it had to do with gratuitous overacting and juxtaposition of what you might expect in a given situation with the opposite...that much I can say...
I also was/am a huge fan of Upright Citizens Brigade, also now defunct. As for what demographic, I'd say both shows were targeted towards a younger crowd dissatisfied with standard network comedy and its recycled jokes. You may not like them, but both shows were decidedly fresh. It also helped to watch several episodes of either, not only to get the feel for them, but also because a lot of the humor referenced earlier sketches or episodes.
If anyone wants to look into either of these shows, I'd recommend the Ass Pennies sketch for UCB and the hit and run episode for SWC as strong examples of each.
Yeah, but rarely did it ever go far enough to make the premises work. Not enough "purely bizarre shit" like that weird father. And that one with "Jellycoe's" <sp???> face, well, it almost worked, but the filler in the middle was lame. Too predictable.
Sorry, but afte growing up on Monty Python and then getting Beavis & Butt-head and finally South Park, stuff like "ass pennies" just isn't funny. Twisted, yes, but not ha-ha funny. Now, if he had been confessing to a priest and not bragging to his friend, that might have made it funny. Bragging to his friend was giving away the joke; confessing to a priest who can never reveal what he has heard would not be. And the whole point is to NOT GIVE AWAY THE JOKE.
If you want purely bizarre shit, go for UCB. SWC was not supposed to be completely bizarre. The father wasn't even bizarre imo -- just a simple joke that was repeated too often.
?? He wasn't bragging to a friend -- he was giving his brother advice on how to get the upper hand in an upcoming meeting with the boss.
I don't think you got the point at all. Why would he tell the priest about ass pennies when the only point of ass pennies is to feel that you are superior to everyone else since *they* are the ones handling pennies that have been in your ass? ("You give my ass pennies to your daughter to throw in fountains and make wishes! [sic] ETC.)
But his brother has been handling his ass pennies all this time, so he's no beter off than the brother's boss...
Here: Telling even your brother that they've been handling your ass pennies makes that someone your peer. Now he can distribute his own ass pennies and even the original "minter" will be denigrated. And he can tell someone else. But tell the priest -- now someone knows but can't do anything about it -- except manufacture his own ass pennies, which will proably send him to Hell anyway!
I think the best thing would be for the guy to have made a surreptitious confessional videotape to be played after his death.
Okay, I should have been more clear. The brother has been handling the guy's ass pennies all the time, but not the boss's. The idea was to get the upper hand over the boss. It is well- established that the brother giving the ass penny advice is superior and unreachable. (8-figure salary, etc.)
Good point. The sketch did say that it was a short-term thing, because the meeting was coming up soon. He wasn't told to do it forever, just to get $30 or so in pennies. The one giving the advice had been doing it for years...
I think the guy was so twisted that he would think that the priest would start doing it as well. He would only tell his brother with strict confidentiality.
But then we don't get him spazzing out, which -- yes -- ruins his "secret," but is hilarious nonetheless. Like anyone else is going to take his advice anyway; even his brother was disgusted and I don't think we were supposed to think that he was going to go through with the ass pennies idea himself. It was just a peek into the thoughts of a really fucked up guy who shoved pennies up his ass.

Oh no no no no...for UCB it *has* to be the Little Donny episode!
For some reason I didn't care too much for that one. imo, a joke that was too long (the entire show long). And not crazy enough. Just a kid with a big dick, really.
Aww that was such a great show. It's a shame they ended it.
I think it's getting to the point where the world is running out of ideas and there is little room left for creativity as far as comedy (and most other arts) is concerned. (If passing off "Battlebots" as 'comedy' isn't a telling sign.) What the respective specialty comedy channels both there and here in Canada need to do is open up the borders, broaden their horizons, and exchange more of their best programming, and open up to more foreign comedies, such as the British.
You have shows like "That's My Bush" and "TV Funhouse", which were never shown, and the new episodes of "South Park" are shown several months late over here. (I've never seen "Funhouse", and I've only seen TMB by downloading them over the Net.) On the other hand, I can think of two programs on our comedy channel, "Internet Slutts" and "Kevin Spencer", which I would recommend to South Park types, that aren't aired over there.
Anyways, as I speak, some kind soul is flooding alt.binaries.multimedia.comedy with all 18 episodes of Internet Slutts that were aired here in Canada. I *highly* recommend downloading and viewing them. It meets all the criteria for sick, twisted, and perverse (with no bleeps nor black dots). If you're limited on bandwidth and/or disk space, I recommend episode 5 ("Murk's New Thing"). If you have room for another, I recommend ep. 8 ("Wally's New Hobby").

Oh yeah, they really did blow up an actual city in Europe for the show, and cast a fetus-sized midget that can talk.
Really, I figure the White House-like sets must be quite expensive. Does anybody know how much a typical big-network TV sitcom costs to produce, for comparison's sake? I figure they're probably comparable, but CC reaches a much smaller audience.

I was not a HUGE fan, but I am sorry to see it go. I recently watched some "glick" episodes, and found them ok at first, untill you relize the interview is the worst part, plus they do a lot of the same things every ep, too repetitive.
