He first appeared in the "Two guys naked in a hot tub" episode, when he, Pip, some first-grade melvin, and Stan were all locked in Mr. Mackey's basement, and played "Charlie's Angels" to get out of the basement, while the grown-up were all getting trashed upstairs at a meteor shower party. It was the second of three episodes last summer that took place on the night of the meteor shower. The first and third episodes, "Cat Orgy" starring Cartman and Shelly(stan's sister and featured the first appearance of Schuyler, who later appeared in the Timmy episode) and "Jewbilee" starring Kyle, Kenny, and Moses, respectively, were some really good episodes. I highly recommend giving them a look.

Actually, he first appeared long before that, in the first season. He was just a minor character who didn't say anything back then, though.

To be a little serious, Butters is most likely based on Sniffles the mouse from the old Warner Brothers cartoons. He speaks in a very similar fashion and its obvious from the first episode (Cartman Gets an Anal Probe) that Matt and/or Trey are fans of old cartoons by their use of a sound bite from an episode with "Owl Jolsen"

Yeah - that's good, I never caught that.

Butters is definitely one of my favorite characters for his voice. That 'little bunny foo foo' bit on Fingerbang was just too funny.

Yeah, that was funny. Butters is such a dork, but he's a good character. I had that damn song going thru my head all day. And Fingerbang, of course. Does Butters have a first name (well probably, but has it been disclosed)?

Actually Butters was there from the very first episode, he just wasnt named and didnt have any lines
