South Park and stupid parents

Here's a snipet of a review for SP:BL&U I saw at Yahoo! from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

"Parents? Listen. Think of every possible permutation of the F-word. Hyphenate these to words representing various members of the family, including species of pet. Imagine an audience of cartoon 8-year-olds attending a movie where they hear all of these epithets, then realize how many real-life under-17s want to see the movie. Once the film's characters start repeating the words at home, in school, in church, then you'll understand why you should just say no."

My first response: Well no shit parents should say no! That's because this ISN'T A KID'S MOVIE!!!!! Parents who take their kids to or let them see this movie are idiots, and when the tykes start cussing up a storm, who will be blamed?? Why, Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Hollywood of course! The parents will, as they always do, not blame their own sorry arrogant asses, but instead blame someone else!

This is a trend in America I'm really getting sick of. It'd be nice to it stopped, but that would mean everyone would have to gain some sort of common sense...and it seems that just won't *ever* happen.

Damn right! I mean, what kind of dickweed lets their kids see a movie or TV show that's rated R/TVMA, then bitch and whine when they see how "bad" it is? They knew that it wasn't intended for kids, so why let them watch to begin with? (personally, youger kids should be allowed to watch South Park or any other "mature" show as long as it's not way over their heads, and as long as they realize that it's just a TV show/movie. But that's an impossible dream. =p) The warning at the very beginning of the show is straightforward-this show is for mature audiences only. That young children shouldn't view it. Simple as that. But no! The parents let their kids watch it, then they are "shocked" at how "bad" the show is. They bitch and whine and say they can't believe they show that "filth" on televison. They complain at the next PTA meeting, and that leads to them controlling what thier kids watch on TV, listen to, read, check out online, see in the movies, etc. Then they lead protests-big ones. And that leads to-*gasp* censorship!!! *fake sobs* <zealot mode> We cannot let those zealots censor us! We must take action and save our rights to kick ass! </zealot mode>

Whether or not younger children should see South Park should be a non-issue. It's on at 10! The same time as dateline and other programs geared directly at adults. Aside from cartoon network, there is no programming on at 10 at night geared toward an under 12 audience. Even Nickelodeon airs shows that would interest adults. When I was that young (a whole seven years ago), I would have been asleep when South Park aired, not because my parents were overbearing and overprotective, but because I was a kid and I needed some damn sleep so I could get up for school in the morning! Have things really changed so quickly? Are these GenX parents pushovers? Someone explain it to me.

It's on HBO, but that's a pay channel, so they get to operate by different rules than Comedy Central.

You're right. Furthermore, cable TV comes with a "parental control" option. Parents who don't want their kids to see certain channels can have them locked out. (Ned Flanders has a satellite dish and locks out over 500 channels!)

Bad parents need scapegoats for their kids' problems. Just like Mothers Against Canada sang: "We must blame them and cause a fuss/ before somebody thinks of blaming us." Bad parents usually blame the media for messing up their kids. That way, it takes attention off of their bad parenting. It actually works! If it's not South Park, it's Beavis and Butt-head, or Bart Simpson, or Ozzy Osbourne, or EC horror comics.

He gets over 500 channels? Last I checked (the fifth season episode "Homer Loves Flanders") it was "Over 230 Channels Locked out!" Can't help but think that's a waste of money...

I dare say #106 had one eye very much on its own critique by the public, and the reaction to South Park. For the T+P cartoon read SP and for the parents' protest read the criticism SP itself has faced. BLU just extends this concept a little further.

Don't blame Southpark, blame Littleton, Colorado. The fallout from that damned shootout in which the media heightens it to be an equivalent to the Oklahoma City Bombing has gotten all the parents in America scared shitless, so they put the blame on scapegoats for causing that fiasco to happen.
