See, the moroms tell you that joesph smith and the BOM are right. JS himself declared the BOM the "most perfect book ever written". The problem is, Bringham Young himself was once quoted as saying that the words of a living prohpet actually take presidence over the words of a dead one. This means, that as a prohpet, everything that JS said (for example, the Word of Wisdom from Doctrines and Covenants) can now be replaced with something that someone from the current church leadership decides.
This allows the church to impose the same level of mind control over the "saints" it has enjoyed for years. If the "saints" actually believe that the current prophet is always correct, but also agree that the BOM is the perfect book and JS completely correct, it is in direct violation of well... Logic. For example, at one time the Word of Wisdom forbade the drinking of "hot beverages", or beverages which contain caffeine, and are hot. As times evolved, and nearly everything in the united states became caffinated (that is called HYPERBOLE) they changed the WOW, and it is now acceptable for a "saint" to drink hot chocolate, cola, or other caffinated beverages, but not coffee, generally.
The mormon church imposes the mind control on its "saints" in this way. Ward bishops will ask church members to do things which are directly against what the BOM teaches, and the members will proceed to do as asked, for fear of not obeying the church. It creates a double standard that most mormons cannot see, because they are literally blinded by their faith. The burning of the bosom they felt is very real, but it is a psychological product, not a spiritual one. They feel that this "proves" the existance of JS as a prophet, even though they are told that living prophets are always right, even if they contradict smith's very own words.
Mormonisn is very far from a Christian religion. The temple ceremonies were installed at about the same time that Smith was finally inducted into the masons, another paganistic religion. Most of the secret ceremonies have been taken directly from the masons, including the sealing ceremony, the creation story, the secret oaths (which were changed in the 1990's, as they were very violent talking abou slitting ones throat from ear to ear and tearing out their toung if they spoke of the sacred ceremonies), handshakes, and bishop system that the mormons now deploy.
A few other things: -Smith was a money digger. he had seer stones BEFORE he "found" them in the hill in NY state. He used them for finding burried treasure. This treasure hunt would consists of smith saying he could see dark satanic spirits which guarded treasure, and if they men who employed him were to dig JUST RIGHT they would get the treasure. As the men were digging, smith would see the so called "demons" take the treasure away. Smith would claim that the men dug incorrectly, and the treasure was taken away by the evil spirit.
-Smith was taken to court and sued for this practice, and in the 1970's, papers were found in a NY jailhouse which PROVE THIS. This proves smith was a money digger.
-Smith had several stories before the angel moroni story. One such story included a "bleeding spaniard" (the ghost of a slain pirate, bleeding from ear to ear) appearing to him to tell him of the plates, which were not religious, but which would bring smith great treasures. This was once said by smiths own mother, as well as several of his nieghbors.
-Smith prophesized so many things which never occured. He is therefore, a false prophet, but that means nothing to the mormons, who for the most part do not read the Bible and therefore do not know much about what Jesus Christ said about false prophets.
-Bringham Young was once quoted as saying that he had not opened his Holy Bible in years.
-Many parts of the BOM are taken directly from the King games (published 1611) version of the Holy Bible, however the plates have been said to been written sometime around 400AD, the same time that the great battles in the USA were being fought, when Moroni burried the plates to reveal to smith nearly 1500 years later in the year 1833 (approx, as there are many different stories smith told about the "first vision" as the LDS calls it).
-Many parts of the original BOM have grammatical errors which would make most 3rd graders cringe. Grammer such as "i had dont seen her" was not uncommon in the first edition of the BOM, the "most perfect book ever written".
-The first edition of the BOM has writing credits to JS himself. But remember, this was the lost gospel, restored.
