I don't really know anything about Philip Glass, but I'm guessing that he is the type of person what would appreciate the blurb: "...the most gawd-awful piece of crap I've ever seen."
Anyone know if that was actually him? As in he wasn't "...imitated, badly"?

Not too sure myself, but I think Phillip Glass is a composer, that most people would seem to think he was "out there". He probably was imitated, with a hefty job on the lyrics, if you get my drift. :)

While I will probably be lynched for it, I have a rather large New Age music collection. I picked up Phillip Glass' "The Photographer" and was not impressed at all. I absolutely loved the parody during the Christmas episode.
They were mimes. European mimes. Can you believe as a kid I saw them in person? And I lived to tell about it!
NewAge is fine. As long as you believe that Philip Glass stinks, no flames here!

I don't pretend to be an expert on Philip Glass... but in my experience, he only MOSTLY stinks. "Music in Twelve Parts" stinks. "The Photographer" stinks. Lots of his other stuff stinks, too. But "La Belle et la Bete" kicks ass, as does his soundtrack to "Bent" (which is otherwise extremely dull). It's too easy to just pigeon-hole Glass as a "musical intellectual" who doesn't want to be understood. He's trying new things-- usually they don't work at all, but every now and then he strikes gold. I think.

Glass is a contemporary composer who does a lot of work in the operatic genre. My professional opinion as an opera singer (seriously) is that it sucks. I believe his most well-known work is "The Voyage" which had its Metropolitan Opera premiere fairly recently. Essentially, the reason he enjoys success is because he's part of the musical intellectual elite--a small circle of artists who write stuff so wacked out and fucked up that only THEY can understand what's happening. No one likes it, but they think that's because they don't understand it, and that if they hear it enough, they'll eventually comprehend the genius behind it and hear its beauty. Whatever.
