Attn: People with cable modem!

How fast (k/sec) are cable modems? I don't understand HOW much faster it is. For example, how long does it take you to download a one meg file??

I'm on a cable modem, and my download speeds are usually limited by the server that I connect to. I've connected to sites before and gotten download speeds of over 300 k/sec before. But if I connect to some redneck server that has an internet connection that consists of a 28.8k modem from some dude's basement, then it's gonna take a while! Overall though, I'd say the average site can deliver data to me at around 80k-150k/sec.

A good working description would be that it "kicks ass". I can start downloading a 20M game demo (or something similar), go to the rest room (#1 only), and when I come back, it's ready to run. If it's 40M,....I'll wash my hands afterwards.

I know that I have downloaded 25 megs in 5 minutes. So, that's a meg every 12 seconds.

It took me about 1hour to download 15MG with 56k v.90 modem. And I thought that it was pretty fast! Goddamn it I gotta get me a cable modem. :|

What ping times do you get in Quake (or your favorite FPS) if you play?????

I downloaded a 33 meg South Park episode in about 2.5 to 3 minutes with my cable modem last week.

Don't get too excited, here ( Rotterdam,Holland,other side of the channel,Europe!!!!!!!!!!!) we ( I ) got the 33mb file in 10 minutes.

Contacted the big boys about this and they said : " 512kb/sec is the max. speed but we meen 512 k bits/s = 64kb/sec"

So on average not too bad but I had hoped on an 10Mbit connection

P.s it's 99guilders/ month comes to aroun 34 quid. unlimited 24h/day no extra costs ( except for buying the install pack) Just board myself to eat.......................... ------------------------------------- Mr Psycho heeft geschreven in bericht ...

c&w should have a cable modem coming out later this year, although if we get it we lose our free calls, hopefully it'l be un metered, but i doubt it and they'll probably charge an arm & a leg for it, but i still look forward to it!!

BT pisses everyone off, I use Telewest Cable(Dundee area) and this gives me free local to other cable users between 8pm and 8am.

This makes late night Direct Modem multiplayer games great! the down side is that the only ISP around that uses cable lines IS telewest, and they cancel the free calls for that service!
