Butters...again

I just saw the millenium episode, and I once again find myself mystified by Butters' unexplained appearance. I thought he was supposed to be a "melvin" and the other kids in the group hated him, yet here he is again standing alongside the usual surviving threesome at the New Years Eve gala at Vegas.

I recall reading here that he's supposed to be just some annoying kid who talks too much and makes a stupid comment about everything, but here, he is given a non-speaking role. What was he doing there, and what are the writers' intentions with him? Is he supposed to represent Trey Parker in some way (similar hair) or the way he was as a child? That would make a bit of sense considering that the other melvin in the "Two Men Jacking Off..." episode was a curly-haired, spectacled math nerd like Matt Stone, and he was in the first grade, making him two years younger than Butters like Matt is to Trey. Are they trying to work him into becoming one of the regulars, perhaps eventually replacing Kenny?

I've always thought the 4 really represented M&T, the heroic and the actual. Stan and Cartman. Kyle and Kenny.

Now you're just reading too much into it. It really is just a tv show dude.

Maybe the joke is on curious and inquisitive types like myself, but what is weird is that in some episodes, he is given a more defined role, whereas, in others, he is used as nothing more than an unexpected extra. For instance, in the "Two Men JO'ing..." episode, he is the annoying melvin who wouldn't stop talking, and in the civil war episode, he is the blabbermouth who gives away Cartman's plans to his enemies.

I suppose he may just be intended as a funny-looking filler to fill in the space left open by Kenny after his death. In any case, he seems to have replaced Clyde as the most commonly used extra. (Butters has a more comical effect than the plain Clyde.)

Nope. Stan is a cartoon version of Trey, Kyle of Matt, and Cartman as "The proverbial annoying fat kid from everyone's past" and "The rubbish in everyone's soul". As for Kenny......

I agree that Kenny has been important thus far, but if they run out of novel ways to kill him every week, then they might just have to kill him for good. Seeing Butters stand in Kenny's place with the other three at the JC/Rod Stewart gala comes as an ominous sign hinting to it. It's also weird that they stand alongside someone they purportedly do not like, as suggested in the melvins episode.

Say, does anybody think Butters would make a neat looking desktop ornament or a stuffed doll? Maybe Matt and Trey see some merchandising potential in him, and are therefore giving him a greater role on the show as a promotion, since the other characters must be getting old by now.
