I just moved to the Bay Area and watched the new South Park which picks on that city. I almost died laughing. Matt & Trey got the city perfect, full of smug, self-righteous adults who enjoy sniffing their own farts, and their kids who take lots of drugs.

While hybrid automobiles emit much less smog, the problem is that the people who drive them emit lots of smug. San Francisco already had the highest levels of smug in the country, but when the people of South Park begin driving hybrids, their smug is so great that after combining with George Clooney's smug it threatens the whole planet.

And it's true that everywhere you go someone offers you acid. That's what I love about the city, I never want for bud and hallucinogens. Absolute paradise. We're so much more progressive than y'all...

Drug culture facts: offering is not providing. Every bought drugs that turned out to be soap? At least, the fake dope can wash your hands.

Some of those Hippies are pretty vicious.

Damn. Seventeen years there and no one offered me any hallucinogens. But maybe I didn't hang out where you do.

Are you kidding?!? San Francisco has been famous for LSD since the 1960s. About 10 or 15 years ago the Navy broke up a ring of sailors who would pick up sheets of acid while docked in SF (LSD is undetectable on drug tests, has no smell, and is easily concealed). Until recently, it was believed that almost all of the domestic production of LSD was from 3 or 4 secret labs set up in SF houses.

How could you live there 17 years and not see any acid? You probably didn't see all the crack whores on Polk Street either.

I suggest you not try to analyze by internet and not tell me what I've seen and not seen.

I repeat, "But maybe I didn't hang out where you do." If you're looking for acid and crack whores I'm sure you can find them, and apparently you have. But do not extrapolate that to "And it's true that everywhere you go someone offers you acid," because it's not true. Except, apparently everywhere YOU go.

Sorry, you're right. I must look like a druggie because everywhere I go people offer me drugs. Even in Mexico they descend upon me offering me Valium and even cocaine. But I do have a hard time believing you've been to Golden Gate Park and not been offered drugs, at least if you use the Haight Street entrance.

'zzat so? I always heard that Stanford was the place to go for acid, "back in the day", as it was manufactured down there and you could get it fresh from the farm, as it were.

If you don't like it here, why did you move here? Obviously you must LOVE it here or you wouldn't be living in one of the two most expensive places to live in North America.

May I suggest Dallas to you?

People don't move for love of an area, they move because they got a job here.

I like my job and I like the money. That is why I moved here. No crushing burden. My employer is far more worried that I would leave than them wanting me to move on.

I bring in money for me and people on my team. We develop exciting, extremely cutting edge technology which is usually a lot of fun. I don't have to hope somebody will pay me to work for them. It is a nice position to be in.

Most people in any reasonably advanced job get the job first and then move. If you are burger flipper level worker, then you can move first and then look for a job. Burger flipping level jobs give you the freedom to move from one hell hole job to another hell hole job in any place of your desire.

We high-tech people are somewhat limited geographically, and it
is usually wise to put the job before the location. But it is not
only burger-flippers who can get a job anywhere; professions like
doctor and veterinarian can as well. (State licensing requirements
need to be considered, but that is not a big obstacle.)
As the world gets "flatter" per Tom Friedman, it will become more
possible to do many jobs from any location.

Good point. I should have specified that this refers to either jobs that need to be done face-to-face, or employers who are mistrustful of geographically distributed work. (And there are still plenty of such employers, including some who actuall make and sell products that facilitate distributed work.)

But I moved here first then found a job. I get tired of the Mexican border after a while and decided to try the Bay Area am I am having so much fun here. So damn expensive, but proximity to San Francisco makes it worth it. It rains all winter, but the rest of the year is usually so mild that little or no air conditioning is necessary. The city is awesome, a pleasant day trip costs can cost $20 or less, more if you decide to partake of the exotic psychoactive substances found around Haight Street. The BART train system and the city Muni buses are awesome, really a very good deal when you consider how much gas and parking costs.

It isn't always like this...we often have days even weeks of clear, mild weather in January and February.

Then they should definitely consider Dallas. There are more jobs in Dallas, especially for the uneducated.

Dallas looks like LA with all the people that are moving there. The Dallas area is spread over a very large area as one continuous city with largely irrelevant city boundaries.
