Pro-fundamentalist messages in SP: BLU

don�t understand all the anti-fundamentalist diatribes on one hand or the fundamentalist anti-South Park stuff otoh.

SP: BLU is one of the most thematically pro-fundamentalist Christian movie around.

<<SPOILERS APLENTY>>

The following are only a few pro-fundamentalist messages:

1. Abortion is a violent attack on a real human being ("stabbed me in the heart with a coat-hanger")

2. Homosexuality is "satanic" (Satan does it), repulsive (you know what scene), frivolous (Saddam�s lust and Big Gay Al�s song), doomed (Satan and Saddam) and socially unacceptable ("That�s gay!" comment; "Life looks gay" or such lyric from "Eyes of a child.")

3. Salvation is by grace and self-sacrifice is the best manifestation of it. (Kenny offers himself for the world and is then brought to heaven, not by Satan presumably, and not by earning it, just an act of faith.)

4. Satan is the inevitable power in this world and prophesied to rule it.

• Saddam is a bad guy.

• Satan ultimately really belongs in hell.

7. Hitler - a pagan, mass murderer -- is in hell. Nice people who aren�t Christian are also in hell too, including one who pretended to be God .(Gandhi/Goerge Burns).

• Hell is a bad place.

• Heaven is only for an elect few.

10. Children can access the Internet and find pornography which will traumatize them.

• Single motherhood breeds trouble. (Cartman and Mom).

12. Pornography, sexual kinkiness and promiscuity break the trust between mother and son. (The German scheisse video). It also leads to social alienation ("A rimjaw is�" followed by looks from other moms.)

• War and violence are bad.

• Foul language leads to trouble.

15. Blasphemy leads to failure (the Mole dies) and social rejection ("Man that kid is fucked up")

16. Big government led by Bill Clinton leads to destruction and tyranny. 17. 17. Racism is bad (yes, most fundamentalists do believe this).

18. Hollywood and entertainment types are shallow and untrustworthy. (Baldwins, Winona Ryder, Conan O�Brien).

19. MOST IMPORTANT: PARENTS SHOULD TAKE REPSONSIBILITY FOR MONITORING THEIR CHILDREN�S ACTIVITIES AND PAY ATTENTION TO THEM!!!

Things are not always what they seem. No point in either group getting self-righteous.

That's not solely Christian Fundie. Actually, it would be a hell of a lot better of a lot more Christian Fundies paid attention to that.

One thing great about Parker and Stone is that they tweak all forms of self-righteousness and political correctness whether left, right, or center. They could have taken the moron route and had Blame Canada movement led by a Falwell type. But no, they pick a center-liberal stereotype like Sheila Broslofsky. That's a good move.

Making fun of fundamentalists for being backward is like making fun of the mentally retarded for being stupid. Most fundamentalists come from narrow often isolated rural environments with little interaction with varied people. Secularist self-righteousness towards fundamentalists is far more a threat than fundamentalst self-righteousness (not that the latter is any good).

Further as you indicate there are alot of things that fundamentalists have in common with others. The duh point below and the "no shit Sherlock" (what an irritating expresion btw) below. Self-righteousness make people want to emphasize the differences, to blame Canada so to speak, rahter than the sameness.

Get used to the idea that the enemy is "us" not "them". This includes fundamentalists.

In Sexual Harrassment Panda, notice it is again not a fundamentalist stereotype but a possibly liberal certainly non-Christian one, Kyle's Dad, who says we live in a liberal democracy and democrats make the laws to tell you what to say at work. But Dad that sounds like fascism. Uh yes, only we don't call it that.

That's satire. Just making recurrent fun of fundamentalists or Republicans, Hollywood style, is a form of self-righteousness little better if at all than that of the fundamantalists themselves. Remember Whoopi Goldberg at the Nobel Prize Awards in SP going out saying twice "Republicans are stupid" to ridiculous roaring laughter? That's real satire. Not bogus Hollywood liberal self-righteousness (which they also make fun of in the Rain Forest episode). When South Park makes fun of religion, which they often do good and funny, it is actually mainstream and not fundamentalist religion they make fun of. TP and MS seem very hip to the fact that real fascism comes from the center and not only or especially the right and left.

In fact, a lot of American fascism is in the militant secularism of the anti-fundamentalists (e.g feminists) as well as the fundamentalists themselves. Political correctness and sexual harrassment litigation is a left-wing thing.

There are no "thems"; only "us". Don't be so eager to look for differences and feel better than "them". There is more in common that one thinks both good and bad.
