Why is it that suddenly I'm hearing that annoying Disney announcer saying 'The party starts August 13th'?

But next time, go see a real show, like "Cabaret" or "Rent", or as long as we're talking about "Rent", see if you can find somewhere to rent the video of "Sweeney Todd". Now *there's* a musical. A murderous barber, flagrant cannibalism and Angela Lansbury before she got all "respectable": What more could you ask for? Singing cats... feh. The only cats in "Sweeney" got put into meat pies.

P. S. Just so this isn't totally off topic, that restaurant I mentioned where I used to go to watch South Park Wednesday nights ("The Hot Tomato") is closed for the entire month of August, leaving me entirely South Park-less until September. Sniff... sniff... :(

I take it you don't like Cats? I'm not a huge fan from what I've heard either. I'm fond of 'Memory', though.

Right. That's Andrew Lloyd Weber for you: One good sing per show. Maybe two. If you took all the good songs from all the Andrew Lloyd Weber shows and put them all together, you'd have one really good show. Maybe.

Yeah, "Rent" is great. Also try "Tommy". And have you been introduced to Sondheim yet? Most people start with "Into the Woods", but South Park fans I would point towards "Assassins". What other musical has John Hinckley singing a love song to Jodie Foster and Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme singing a love song to Charles Manson?

Rent the movie, with Liza Minelli. Definitely deserved all of the eight Oscars it won. I saw it in the theatre as well, with Joel Gray reprising his role as the MC, and was equally taken with it. The choreography and direction was done by the late Bob Fosse. It deals with a cabaret singer's love affair during the rise of the Nazi party in Germany and was taken from the play "I Am A Camera".

Rabbit (Not always fond of the theatre, but highlights include "Evita" on Broadway, one of Yul Brynner's last performances of "The King and I" and one of the finest performances of "Turandot")

I lived in NY for four years, although I was *4* when I moved! So you can guess I didn't see much of broadway then. But I did visit at the begining of the summer and saw *3*, count 'em *3* shows in *3* days! I also got to catch the one "jekyll and Hyde", which has been my favorate since I heard the music. Oh well. I didn't see my other favs (Rent, Phantom, Les Mis, Caberet, The Lion King, and Chicago...gee, I guess you could call me a theatre nut...I love aqll of 'em!)I wish I could go back....maybe in a few years. Yeppers, I'm 15!

Our school theater group has 2 NYC trips a year (which is how I got to see Cats--I've also seen The King And I), and we were considering going to see Rent, but the moderator was able to get us tickets for The Lion King, so we're going to see that on a Sunday night in May (which means we'll be gone really late, and I'll get to skip school the next day, even though we're not supposed to...) So, eventually, I think I'll be able to see Rent! :)

Well, anyway, I think those singing cats in the musical are better at singing than Heathcliff was! ;)

No restaurants in *my* town show South Park. No bars or anything either! I was around a few months ago selling grand raffle tickets in all the bars (top seller in the school of those tickets wins $75, so I was going crazy with selling those things) on Wednesday nights, and all they had on was NASCAR, fishing shows, or hokey cowboy stuff (the bars had satellite dishes and stuff, so even though our area didn't get Comedy Central then, they woulda been able to show South Park if they wanted to). My town sucks ass. (not that I hate NASCAR--it's just that our town just never really even *heard* of South Park--when I'm out wearing my South Park shirts, I'm stared at as if I'm an alien, even though we now have the channel--no one really bothers to watch it for some reason)

"The King and I"? Ugh... this is what's wrong with America today. What about "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum"?

Cough! Cough! You mean they opted for "The Lion King" over "Rent"? Okay... to be fair, "The Lion King" is a good show too... but... but... "The Lion King" over "Rent"?!! Ludicrous... ludicrous, I tell you. Bathwater!! Wait, never mind that....

Oh, it's not the quality of the singing that bothers me; It's the quality of WHAT they're singing. As long as we're on the topic of Heathcliff, can anyone parse out the lyrics to the opening song? "Heathcliff, Heathcliff, no one should..." is as far as I can get.

Well... yeah... but I'm assuming you get to watch South Park at home, yes? I *do* have cable, but the TV is monopolized by my upper-60s Korean war vet roommate who watches CNN, CNBC, MSNBC and Turner Classic Movies all day and apparently never leaves the apartment except to buy food except once when he left to sit kadish for his mother.

But anyway, they reopen in September, so I can catch up then.... Oh, and I found out what's in a "Kenny Shooter"-- Kahlua, Bailey's and Frangelico. Good stuff.

Where are you, upstate New York? What you really ought to do, instead of all this Broadway crap, is come into the city for some downtown fringe theater. The second annual Fringe Festival starts up next weekend, and although I'm not taking part in it this year, I have a few friends who are, and I can guarantee you'll pay A LOT less than Broadway ticket prices, and see stuff that's A LOT more... let's say... unusual.

If I can use a sea food metaphor, and I think I can, the fringe is like sushi and Broadway is like fillet of sole. This is excluding Andrew Lloyd Weber, of course, who is like fish sticks. I understand he also likes fish sticks. Either Harold Pinter or Tony Kushner is like baked Alaska, but I can't remember which.

P.S. And here's another tip for South Park/Musical Theater fans: See if you can track down a recording of "Marat/Sade"-- now THERE'S a trippy show. (Although technically it's a play with music, not a musical.)

I agree. 'The King and I' was sorry.

I loved the TLKoB soundtrack, but it's a movie. And you can see the movie anytime. And though I've never actually seen the stage version of TLK, Rent probably *is* a lot better.

Umm..'terrorize the neighborhood.' And that's all I remember. I haven't gone near that show for several lifetimes, and as I'm using lifetimes for a comparison, I may as well say that I'll watch it again when Kenny stops dying every week (the show stopping doesn't count).

I kind of like Andrew Lloyd Webber, in 'Phantom' at least.

Heh... "Phantom" is a Maury Yeston musical (Maury Yeston did "Nine", and the currently running "Titanic"). You mean "The Phantom of the Opera". :)

Yeah, that's definitely his best-- and the best any sensible person can say is that they kind of like it. I admit, I kind of like it, too-- but there's far too much stuff, past and present, that blows it away.

I haven't seen it yet, either-- but there's supposed to be a really excellent movie version of "Marat/Sade" that stars the original cast. Of course, they should've changed the title to, "A Filmic Interpretaion of 'The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as Performed by Inmates in the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade' as Performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company under the Direction of Peter Brooks", but they didn't. Anyway, if you can track that one down, it's well worth a rent-- everyone says it's great. Actually, you'd probably better see it before you go out and buy the recording-- the music is, well... sort of weird.

I may be showing my age, but the only time Webber's resembled a good composer is when he did Jesus Christ Superstar.

Ugh is the word there! We went to see The King And I because that was the musical our school put on for the spring--I was stuck in it. I was a royal wife, which actually *did* sorta kick ass because the guy who played the king was *HOT*!!! ;) Other than that, it sucked! I didn't get to see "A Funny Thing....", but my friend did, and she loved it. I'd also love to see that one.

Yep! We just got Comedy Central about a month ago, which is good--I hope they re-run the beginning eps at some time or another, so I can get them all on tape! ;)

Nope, I'm in Northeast Pennsylvania. I wish I could go, but it's my cousins birthday and my mom would have a hissy tantrum :(
