I heard that the actual truth they kill Kenny is because they (Trey and Matt) like to do it because they like hearing the phrase "Oh my god, they killed Kenny!"
BTW I actually saw an old ex-friend of mine named Ken for the first time in a year and a half, and I said "Oh my god! They didn't kill Kenny. You bastards!"
