Best episode ever. John Edwards IS the biggest douche in the universe.
On or about Wed, 27 Nov 2002 22:44:46 -0500, Z? <> made the sensational claim that
Oh man, I was dying. I've been through *exactly* what Stan did in this ep. Except for getting my own show, because I really wasn't quite so good. I did get almost exactly the same reactions from people who buy into Edwards' shit. "Wow, how did you know that?" "You told me you fucking dumbass!"
This episode WAS great. I especially laughed my ass off at the Derp Di Derp Derp shit. I don't know why but it was just so perfect. It fits. There's no point in having any words in those trailers, just go blah blah blah, etc. Fucking great.
It was especially poignant since Comedy Central showed an ad for a Rob Schneider movie right before the episode -- and the ad was almost exactly like the first parody trailer!
I laughed my ass off at the Stapler bit and then had to chase it around the room with a broom for a half hour.
Der derpee dumb.
Yeah, I lost it, too. My stepsister watched this episode, her first ever viewing of South Park, and I damn near fell on the floor laughing so hard at the Stapler bit to which she replied, 'This is so stupid!"
I guess she isn't really wrong. But eh...
I just showed the tape to my wife. Early this morning she was in here on the computer, and she saw all my handwritten notes, and she says, "What's all this 'Derp dee derpitty derpee derp'???" I told her she'd have to see the tape. So I just showed it to her. She laffed HER ass off! She asked, about both Edwards and Schneider, "That is so bad! How can they get away with that!? That's slander!" I said, "They just can!"

Even if it was slander, nobody's going to take the side of a douche like John Edwards.

Wouldn't John Edwards have to prove that he can talk to the dead if he took this to court?

Edwards is a public figure, so the standard is higher than that. To sue Trey and Matt (or Comedy Central, based on their actions) successfully, Edwards would have to prove not only that he can communicate with the dead, but that Trey & Matt knew this or should have known it and acted with reckless disregard of its veracity. Even then he'd probably lose since the episode was obviously a joke - as was the case with the cartoon that Jerry Falwell tried to sue Larry Flynt over. [For a horrible re-enactment of that suit, see the misnamed "People vs. Larry Flynt."]
Theres a Disclamer in the beginning of every episode, nobody can sue them.

Well, people can TRY to sue them... but winning such a lawsuit is virtually impossible.

them.
True, but for reasons unrelated to the disclaimer.
No, just prove he's not a douche, infinitely more difficult.
So...... If I posted HILARY CLINTON IS A SHIT HEAD!!!!!!! on the Internet, and he/she/it sued me, would I have to prove that I was aware that his/her/it's head wasn't made of shit, and acted recklessly in that regard? It wouldn't be a joke, so what would my defense be? I would stand by my comments.

Um, no. Assuming you wanted to win the lawsuit rather than lose, that would be *her* job.
The defense would be that calling someone a "shithead" only connotes the fact that you dislike someone, and not that that person's head isn't really made of excrement. I suppose you might have a different defense if you really had claimed that she was a shithead literally rather than figuratively. In that case you'd probably want to argue that no one believed your claim, so her reputation wasn't harmed by it.

It's not slander. To sue someone for slander, you have to prove that what they said about you wasn't true. How on earth would Rob Schneider prove in court that he doesn't play stupid roles in stupider movies? It would be fun, though, watching John Edwards's attorneys try to prove that he isn't a douche, and that Trey and Matt knew he wasn't a douche (or that they acted with reckless disregard as to whether or not he was a douche).
We're talking Pay Per View here.
hehehe... You couldn't do it in the UK, but there seems to be some understanding of Artistic Commentary in the US
