New 7/4 Episode

So, what did everyone think about tonight's episode? I thought it was ok, but not as good as last weeks. My favorite part was when the kids saw each other for the first time after getting their heads shaved and Cartman asked everyone to guess who he was. Classic.

Kind of a lame ep as South Park goes. Good though. I thought the funniest was when Kyle wakes Cartman up and he is having a nightmare of Paula Poundstone. hahahahaha. Very topical and current.

I have to wonder about 4th of July symbolism though. We have a quasi-religious group asking for money from Washington in the face of discussions about government-funded services offered by religious groups, set against the liberation theme of Lincoln being the _evil_ giant attacking statue. In all, it seems like the message is that freedom shouldn't be taken too far or bad things will happen but is that really what they are suggesting? Although this could just be an echo of the 'new' freedom in 'cartman says' and various liberation messages in 'cripple fight'.

Interesting to note that 'sea man', not a god in particular, could have been a loose slight to the ancient greek god of the waters, poseidon, who was rather fond of procreation, but the god of gods and man, Zeus (poseidon's brother), was not mentioned (like Jesus's father, or brother in the abstract sense, like eric, stan and kyle were 'brothers').

So, to recap, they've trolled: gays, the differently-abled, religion, cults, boy scouts, and TV censors in three episodes. They're either running out of material, or sombody set up us something bigger later this season (the bomb?) (sorry :-)

I thought it interesting that Sea Man's bird, Swallow, had the ability to breathe underwater.

I think if you look back at prior episodes you won't find this record to be all that much more intense than any handful of randomly chosen episodes. There aren't many eps where *some* sacred cow isn't deflated, some celebrity parodied, some taboo broken, etc.

BTW, I wouldn't count the latest Big Al episode as 'trolling' of gays; much more of it was 'trolling' homophobia.

I thought it was very much a rehash of Chimpokomon. But the sheer corniness of this episode had me laughing quite a bit. (The world's most revered deities being trivialized into the form of cheesy cartoon superheroes, and a giant John Wilkes Booth statue killing the giant Lincoln statue...hehehe) Next, will they make an equivalent of the Legion of Doom?

Am I psychic or what? I kind of sensed Butters getting phased in as far back as the "Are You There God..." episode, when Butters was standing in Kenny's place with the other three for no apparent reason at the millenium gala, other than the fact that Kenny was dead. I get the feeling M&T would like to insert Butters in place of Kenny, but feel it is too late to change the structure and the central characters of the show. Kenny's usefulness on the show seems pretty much passed.

The 'seaman' joke is OLD(!!) and unoriginal. Remember: "Beavis' dad was in the navy. He was a seaman. huh...huh...huh"

I guess today, they decided to commit a sacrilege against Americans by mocking one of the most beloved presidents in US history, and reassassinating him, all in time for July 4th.

Maybe he threatened to quit the show if he didn't get a stronger storyline :-)

Comedians have been trying to find an angle on mocking Lincoln for years. David Leno, and Johnny Carson before him, tried, but their Lincoln jokes fell flat. Lincoln semms untouchable.

The late, great icebox.com used to have Xeth Fineburg's animated series "Hard Drinkin' Lincoln." I hope that someone can either revive icebox.com or put its great cartoons on another site. Comedy Central could even air them on a weekly series (perhaps calling it "Fresh From the Icebox").

Okay, way back when, there used to be a Saturday morning cartoon called "Super Friends." Aquaman was one of them, and he had the ability to breathe underwater and talk to fish.

We all knew that he sucked, but no one wanted to admit it. My hunch is that they hated Aquaman as much as I did.

Season 5's first clunker! I didn't laugh once during the whole thing, the most unfunny episode since April 1, 1998. I came close to laughing twice: the Paula Poundstone joke and seeing the cast of "That's My Bush". I hope they dig more into Paula Poundstone next week. I'd hate to see her mention wasted on an episode like this. They really need to dig into her and Rosie.
