What is this crap about Comedy Channel (PAY TV) buying the rights to the 2nd season off of SBS?

You'd have to say that South Park is one of SBS's most popular regular shows. There would need to be a laaaarge sum of money involved for them to sell to pay tv.

I think there would be outrage if it happened. I know I would be upset, as South Park has become one of my favourite shows. The Simpsons just seems old these days, and their shows are quite frequently misses rather than hits. Take their season finale last night - some bits were funny, most were not. I think they're running out of ideas.

For the Americans reading this thread - you have to know that pay tv is a recent phenomenon in Australia. We have three commercial channels which show just about all the shows we want to see (or are worth seeing), and lots that are shite. I'd have to say most of the shite shows are Australian-made, such as Blue Heelers, Full Frontal, etc. Ironically it is these obviously crappy shows that regularly get in the top 10 ratings for the week. The other shitty shows are American sitcoms such as Suddenly Susan, Just Shoot Me, etc. I often wonder if the actors actually realise what they are doing is such crap. Then I remember that everybody needs to work and perhaps they were in a tight spot when the show was being cast. But back to the story: We also have two government funded stations - the ABC and SBS. SBS is mainly for international shows. All morning they show news programs from non-English speaking countries. Their movies are mainly in non-English languages and are subtitled.

The thing is that Australia has a large area of its mand-lass as countryside. The three commercial stations don't get shown there - only a hybrid of all of them (mainly Channel 10), plus SBS and ABC.

My parents live in one of these country towns, about 500 kilometres from Brisbane, Queensland. I went there a couple of holidays ago, and just about every second house has a pay tv satellite-dish on their roof, including my parents. Meanwhile, living in Brisbane itself, I have seen but a couple of such satellite-dishes in a city of about 1 million. Having watched pay tv I can tell you why hardly any city people have it. Unless you like watching reruns from the 60s, then it's shite. There is one channel which shows new movies maybe a month or two before a commercial station will, but it's not worth getting pay tv just for that. The other point is that they will repeat that movie at least four times. I have no idea what it's like in the US, but it's probably a lot different.

Main point - pay tv is pretty new, and there hasn't been a case yet where a popular show was exclusively shown on a pay tv channel. I'd hate South Park to be the first.

Huh? I'm not the one whining. I have no problem with paying for a quality show. Why do you (collective) think you're entitled to get it free?

Listen-- When "Babylon 5" (of which I am not particularly a fan, I admit) moved from regular TV to cable TV, no one over here protested. It's business. Why shouldn't you have to pay for something you enjoy?
