As a longtime member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, I am proud to be the first one here to post that we have voted to give the award for best score of the year to Trey and Marc Shaiman for SP:BLU.
With any luck, I'll be the one presenting the award. (I presented Matt and Trey with our animation award two years ago for Spirit of Xmas.)

Who said anything about the Academy? I'm not an Academy member. I'm a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and after a long dull voting meeting, I indeed have no better way to unwind than sitting around posting on newsgroups.

I'd say we have next to zero value as a predictor, since our choices *tend* to be more "daring" than the Academy's -- as would the choices of just about anyone. (But we're still proud of it.)
Our only power vis a vis the Academy is to put a bug in their minds about something to consider and perhaps to validate the legitimacy of some vaguely offbeat choice. I have no doubt that the decision, for instance, of the National Society of Film Critics a few years ago to give Best Picture to Babe made it easier for the Academy to nominate the movie.
In this case, I'm not sure we'll have effect. But of course it was worth doing anyway.
Jeez, if that's how much sweat can draw at auction, maybe I should go for the big score and try to shake something lower.
