Our VCR was a top-loading model with a mechanical eject function. The "remote" for our VCR was a small switch that attaced to the VCR with a 20 foot cord. The only two fuctions on the remote were Play and Pause. You pushed the switch up to pause, and pushed it down to resume play. Our TV was a Zenith, basically a picture tube encased in a huge wooden cabinet with an rotary analog channel selector, with only 13 channels available. There was a push/pull button to select UHF and VHF bands, and we had an aerial VHF/UHF antenna with a box that stayed inside. You had to turn a knob on the box to orient the antenna in the correct direction for the best signal.

My first set was a Capehart console with a round 16" CRT, which one of my great-aunts got rid of when she got a new set. That TV lasted...oh, a few years, anyhow. Skipping all the years in between and going ahead to 1976, I had a small 12" b&w portable TV in my bedroom. The set went bad two years later and was replaced by a Zenith Space Command 300 (no remote) 19" portable which I rescued from a neighbor's trash. That set lasted all of one year, then the horizontal output tube went gassy, throwing the AGC out of gear (overbiasing the grids of the IF and tuner tubes so much that they were solidly cut off). I put the set in my basement and bought a new Zenith 12" solid state b&w portable. That set lasted 22 years; I brought it with me when I moved to my present residence, a small apartment in an even smaller northern Ohio town, in 1999. However, I put the set out with the trash in 2000 (even though it still worked, except for the UHF channel selector being jammed on one channel) after finding that I had no room for it here (I had also brought along my Zenith Sentry 2 19" color set which wound up in my bedroom, where it is to this day). The TV in my living room is an RCA XL-100 19" table model, which I purchased new when I moved here in November 1999, over four years ago. It still works great on cable (the reception is so bad here everyone in this area has cable), except for a minor problem in the beginning (the RF port snapped off the tuner PC board). However, once that was repaired, the set worked well and still does to this day, producing an excellent picture on Comcast digital cable.
