What the fuck is the difference, really, between actually saying "shit" on TV vs. saying "shit" on TV and having it bleepd, yet have it obvious what was said? Christ. If someone is going to be offended by seeing or hearing "cunt" or "fuck," don't tell me that they are perfectly happy w/ half-bleeped versions of such or c*nt or f*ck. What idiot sees f*ck and doesn't realize it's "fuck"?!!
It's sort of like porn that has been censored w/ black bars, or "cable" versions of pornos that don't show penetration yet have tons of wanton orgiastic sex scenes. Censorship rules are so stupid...

I was not referring to the SP episode specifically, but bleeping in the general sense on any show or movie. In other words, if it's obvious what word was bleeped, bleeping it is pointless, imo.

Oh, please. Kids were saying curse words WAY before South Park was a gleam in their creators' eyes...
The PTC is saying that TWO-YEAR OLDS are watching SP? Typical religious zealotry... blame the producers and the networks INSTEAD of irresponsible parents.
Oh, PLEASE. Mark Harmon said "shit happens" on "Chicago Hope" *years* before last week's episode of SP. And people have said it way before that. I think the PTC is picking on SP simply because it's so popular. I'll bet if "shit" was said on some other *less popular* show, there'd be barely a reaction from people like the PTC.
And the endless crusade on the part of religious zealots like the PTC will continue to annoy and disgust the rest of the populace until we can't take it anymore...
Hm, can't deny that.
Hell fucking no! The people at the PTC can eat shit and die! 8O
Yaright. I don't think I'll be doing THAT shit. ~_O
Mm, this is the part that made me totally keel over. First, that they presume to demarcate the lower limit of comprehension at age 2, when most kids have only barely learned to talk, let alone understand TV dialog, and second, that they assert that 2-year-olds will either be awake at 10pm to watch TV or be deliberately shown videotapes of the broadcast.
The self-proclaimed protectors of morality have always been full of shit (*163*) and by now their silly-ass rants are just plain funny. I wouldn't look for anything to come of this pronouncement, except possibly a clever takeoff thereon by Matt and Trey if it gets any more publicity.

From now on I better watch my potty mouth in front of my child, and I am still quite capable of deciding what she can and cannot watch on TV.

No, but poisonous plants, unless poinsettias, do contain a venom or toxin. Even dictionary.com wil give you this definition:"poisonous Capable of harming or killing by or as if by poison; toxic or venomous."
As snopes says: the "American Medical Association's Handbook of Poisonous and Injurious Plants lists nothing more than occasional vomiting as a side effect of ingesting otherwise harmless poinsettia leaves."
Irritant != poison.
As the AFU archive, previously referenced in this thread[1], states, "F. The red leaves of Poinsettias (aka the Xmas Plant) are deadly poisonous. T. Poinsettia sap and leaves are highly irritating and can harm small children."
(I'd amend that to "can be highly irritating".)

Vomiting sure fits "harming" and "illness" imo. And from your snopes.com:
"Every holiday season newspapers run stories about whether or not Poinsettia is toxic and to what degree. Although many species in the genus Euphorbia are highly toxic, poinsettia is not among them. Having said that, ingestion of this plant probably will make you sick (it just won't kill you)."
"[M]ake you sick" -- sounds like illness to me.
Bao H. Lammy wrote:
"especially"? You're stretching a point, here. Knives and peanuts are poisonous, too.
Not my snopes.com, Barbara's snopes.com. I make no representations as to the voracity of the assertions therein; I used it to find the AmericanMA Handbook's words.
You appear to have only read the top half of my post. In the attached hospital and government webpages and peer-reviewed journal articles, I actually can find no evidence to support Barbara's "ingestion of this plant will probably make you sick". I also suspect the sporadic reports of vomiting are not the effect of a specific toxin, but are irritative, psychological, or coincidental effects. This is what happens when you can't do a placebo-controlled study.
If you have any actual evidence that poinsettias are toxic, please pass it my way, and I'll gladly add it to the new FAQ.
Lara
I'm not stretching anything. That's the dictionary definition -- sans "Remember this." Check dictionary.com if you don't believe me.
I did: http://www.sw.org/poison/poisonousplants.htm This notes stomach irritation, and vomiting and diarrhea in some pets. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/nasd/docs4/va98070.html Notes abdominal pain and nausea. http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/386.html Notes gastric irritation.
That fits *my* understanding of at least one definition of "poisonous." I never limited my words to include humans only, btw. Yes, just about anything can cause death and sickness if ingested in enough quantity. I made that point days ago. The point is that the chemicals in these plants definitely serve no good purpose if consumed, and actually have bad effects in some. Death? No. That is not a requirement of something that is described is poisonous. Affecting all? Again, not a requirement.
Obviously, this has broken down into a semantic disagreement. When I read a definition of poison as meaning that it can cause illness *or* death, I take the "or" literally. When I think of "illness," nausea, gastric irritation, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea all qualify as well.
Is it an urban legend that poinsettas are deadly, that some kid died because s/he ate a leaf? Sure. But I stand by the allegation that the chemicals in a poinsetta serve no benefit for consumption and can cause illness if eaten, unlike peanuts, for example. (My example was salt, which would kill you if eaten in massive quantity.) Hence, poisonous. Deadly? No, unless eaten in ridiculous quantity. Toxic? Not lethally.
Sorry, wanted to clarify. In a hurry and was just taking a break while packing for a trip to Seattle.
What is poisonous? Everything in enough quantity. That's not the point. Peanuts are not toxic in the normal sense because most people actually benefit from them. They don't see harm, for sure. Those that do are allergic, which is another matter. Knives are not even organic. You might as well say that a Toyota is poisonous if eaten.
That's your suspicion. I go by what I've read already and what you've provided. Your suspicion may be true...it may not be.
Bao H. Lammy wrote:
Enjoy. I liked Seattle.
Exactly. There you go again. Yet peanuts fit the dictionary.com definition of "poison", which is why I used them to illustrate my disagreement with d.c's definition.
Which is why I labelled it a suspicion, rather than presenting it as a statement of fact. I'm more than willing to look at alternative explanations; my request for info for the FAQ was not a facetious one.
Lara
Sounds like I'm also in semantic disagreement with dictionary.com, which doesn't surprise me. I believe their definition is too broad in a scientific/medical sense.
I missed that, as I don't read alt.tv.southpark (which is why I have repeatedly set followups to afu). I came into the thread not to argue with you, but to disagree with the email-morphing twit "Jħ" who abused Barbara in complete ignorance of who she was. As you note, you and I are largely in violent agreement.
To quote Scott Wheeler via Simon Slavins, "You can't go blatantly and provocatively agreeing with me! That's against RFC 666."
Peanuts, as I'm sure you are aware, kill a whole lot more people than poinsettias do. Yet I still don't rate them as "poinsonous", despite dictionary.com's definition.
Same as poinsettias, then. You really define salt as a "poisonous" substance? Better add chocolate, then. And dihydrogen monoxide.
Lara
<snip snip snip>
Thank you! In my rush, I failed to write good sentences. Their meaning was partially lost in my butchery of the language. This summarizes my position:
----- Lethal in mass quantities: everything Poisonous (including causing illness) in mass quantities: everything
It is rather apparent to me that since these words exist, there must be a practical use for them. Since everything is techinically poisonous and lethal -- even water -- in practical terms, we must limit ourselves to reasonable quantities. Additionally, personal allergies should not be used to describe a substance as poisonous simply because of the allergy -- particularly when others *actually benefit* from the same thing. (To me, that's a very important point.) I _suppose_ you could say that peanuts were poisonous *to John Doe* if he had a bad allergy to them if you really wanted to, but it would be silly to call peanuts poisonous in general.
Beneficial to none for consumption (being inorganic): knives, Toyotas.
Beneficial to many (if not most or all) for consumption: water, salt, and yes -- peanuts. Most people get nutritional benefits from peanuts.
Beneficial to none for consumption, containing a substance causing non-allergic (as I saw no reference to the reactions to poinsettas being blamed on allergies) illness in some after consumption of non-massive quantities: poinsettas
So, that's the difference to me -- the fact that peanuts are beneficial to most for consumption, while poinsettas are not. Peanuts cause an allergy-related illness in some; poinsettas cause a non-allergy related illness in some. (I make that distinction because I feel it is incorrect to call something a poison when it is really just acting as an allergen.)
Now, if poinsettas causing some sort of illness is attributed directly to an allergic reaction to them, then I cede the point. As I understand it currently, it is not an issue of allergies.
;-) cya around maybe.
LMAO! Anyway, all I was trying to say was that Poinsettias are classified as toxic or poisonous however you linguists would like to put it. Keep your kids and animals from eating them or they will get sick. Also wash your hands after pruning or playing with one. I've also heard of Venus Poinsettia Trap plants eating small children and animals, so be leery of your next purchase! Have fun...

It will make you very ill if ingested in massive and ridiculous quantity, yet is not conventially considered a "poisonous" substance (unlike poinsettias, widely considered to be "deadly poisonous"). The dangers of psychogenic polydipsia are well know to afu; I'm happy to forward you some more information if you're interested.
That would be me.
Bicarbonate, conventionally, but your truism stands. More or less.
Absolutely.

Not sure what AFU is. I'm assuming that it's an acronym for some organization over in OZ with you? Anyway, I never use a real email address and I post through a shell account so that I can't be traced. I just stumbled across the message looking for SP episodes and thought I'd reply. My little sister ate a few poinsettia leaves when she was 2 years. Her throat was swolen, her motuh was full of ulcers as well as vomitting and diareah. We had to rush her to the hospital for some injections. I'm not sure what they were, but I'm sure you are.. ;) I just didn't want some less enlightened, vegetarian person coming in and deciding to feast on the red stuff next Christmas! As I said have fun..... JAS thats what all the ascii code says

Poison plants don't kill people; *poisons* kill people.

Apparently they are. The story about the baby who allegedly diedfrom eating poinsettia leaves is false. While I wouldn't recommend eating a poinsettia salad, no one has ever died from eating it.
Poisonous does not inherently mean death-causing. Even on the web site at snopes.com debunking the myth that they are toxic:
Every holiday season newspapers run stories about whether or not Poinsettia is toxic and to what degree. Although many species in the genus Euphorbia are highly toxic, poinsettia is not among them. Having said that, ingestion of this plant probably will make you sick (it just won't kill you).
Therefore, it is *not* an urban legend that they are poisonous. It *is* an urban legend that they are toxic. (Or course, anything is toxic in enough quantity. Try eating 50 lbs. of salt in an hour, for example.)
If they're poisonous, they're toxic (synonyms). I think the point here is that they're not lethal.

Why didn't you say that in the FIRST place?
What in particular? I didn't start the thread. Someone (was it you?) said it was an urban legend that they were poisonous. I simply looked it up in dictionary and it said that they were. It's not my duty to research every possible rebuttal before posting. And above, I should add "lethally" before "toxic."
care to explain the difference? i wouldnt write "non-toxic" on a poison bottle.
In case you didn't bother reading further, when it was clarified, I always understood "toxic" to mean a higher level of dangerousness than "poisonous," -- specifically that "toxic" meant lethally poisonous. Now, skipping all the lengthy talk about how everything is technically poisonous (and lethally, at that) in enough quantity, I now understand that poisonous and toxic are basically synonyms. Hence:
Therefore, it is *not* an urban legend that they are poisonous. It *is* an urban legend that they are lethally poisonous.
