Scott Newman!!!Please! Answer this!!!

Greetings Proud Scott Newman,

First: I'm not trying to flame you. I appreciate and admire your patriotism. But, One big problem I have with "certain" parts of Canada, is the censorship of film,video and magazines. I'm NOT talking about PORNO either. I've been to various parts of Canada and I know certain horror film and videos are BANNED. WHY??? Be serious with your answers. Why should your government decide what you see at home or a movie theater. I know of at least one magazine that is regularly stopped by the Canadian border guards and Customs. That magazine is Mike Weldons, "PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO". If you don;t believe me I can send you copies of the letter page where Canadian readers mention that on trips over to the U,S. border their copies are taken.Its a damn magazine about cult films.I don't see the danger in reading articles about such B-movie actors as: FRED WILLIAMSON, Ed Wood, Bruce (father of Crispin) Glover, and R.G. Armstrong.

I understand that England is 100 times worse with film censorship. In the U.K. (at one time or the other) Resevior Dogs was BANNED out right. I still can't believe that Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" is not allowed to be shown at ALL!!!! Even some Disney films are snipped of scenes there. The Brits have a whole list of titles that are BIG TIME trouble if you even think about bringing them in! Again, I'm not talking porn! CLOCKWORK ORANGE, is another film that is OUTLAWED there. What the Hell, It was made by their own countrymen. Its regarded as one of the best films ever made. I know of universities that show it as part of their film studies classes!!!

Scott, my point is, that this is one thing that I fell makes us different from your country. now, I know there are tons of religious groups here in the U.S. that are trying to force their will on us and make censorship of our media a reality. As much as you HATE us Yanks down here, at least, for right now, NO ONE is telling me what I can read or watch. I've met some Canadians here in my home town who told me about how the film you see in a theater in Ottawa, may be shown in a totally different version in another part of Canada.

So, I think you are some what wrong when you brag about being free up North. Hey, America ain't perfect, but we don't have government controlled censorship. (YET!!!???). I'm free to watch a gory horror video/film. I'm free to read a cult film magazine without some border guard yanking it from me!! Bye, THE U-BOT!!

p.s. What red blooded yank, PISSED IN YOUR KRAFT DINNER OR BACK BACON TO MAKE YOU HATE US SO MUCH. I've been to Ottawa,Toronto, and Montreal, and found that most Canadians were actually VERY friendly and nice to talk to. I've made some nice friendships on my trips to the GREAT WHITE NORTH with total strangers.(Hi KEV and VAL)

The big difference between Canada and the U.S. is in government clauses. United States : "Right to bear arms", "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". Canada : "Peace, Order and Good Government".

Canada happens to be more conservative in the United States, and believes (not unlike most of the rest of the civilized world... the US is the exception) that it is in the best interests of society to limit what their citizens have access to. The United States seems to believe that the interests of the individual are far more important than that of anything else. Canada believes that sometimes private interests can conflict and harm those of society at large.

Depends on what the cult films are, and if that is all that is discussed... I have a feeling it isn't, or they wouldn't be stopping it. The problem with censorship is that it means you need an adjudicator to determine what is allowable and what is not. They may sometimes make choices which we do not agree with, e.g. edit South Park, stopping magazines at the border. But I feel better knowing someone is trying to stop offensive material from entering the country... and i have a feeling a lot of my fellow country men will disagree with me.

Again, you may feel this is nazi-rific, but it is the way things work in much of the world. The US is seen as a cesspool where just about anything goes, which can be very detrimental to a society. It looks to me sometimes like Rome falling to greed and avariciousness.

That's probably a good thing. Why should people be able to buy some of the things you can buy in the States? So it makes an individual feel better, but there are ramifications for others in society; just because the connections are indirect, it doesn't mean they don't happen. I suppose you support legalized prostitution? I mean, it's just consenting adults, except money is changing hands. It's the same deal, we're protecting disadvantaged members of society.

I've never heard that. I think someone is making up stories.

I've met some nice Americans, but they were the exceptions. Your country sucks, and I am very nice and friendly to talk to (and honest, and modest ;).

But government is uncontrolable. Eventually, it forces what government wants onto the people instead of the other way around.

Why do you feel better? If you found it offensive, you could simply refuse to watch it! And what happens the moment that you WANT to watch something, but you can't because someone ELSE used their coercive censoring power? As an adult (I assume), don't you feel angry that the government doesn't trust your judgement on those things?

Rome fell because of poor national defense, and an empire that was WAY too big for anyone to control. It did not fall because of a lack of social conservatism.

Why SHOULDN'T we be allowed to buy it? You can't buy ANYTHING unless you have a willing seller.

And then the people responsible for the ILLEGAL ACTIONS are responsible for it. If you don't like the ramifications of things, then don't hang around people who do those things.

Yes. Because government is simply unable to stop that enterprise. Every cop has his price, and they are continually paid off. As a result, there are several BIG rings of prostitution and very few free-agents.

Exactly. So what is your problem with it? If you don't like/want the services of a prostitute, then don't pay for services from one.

No one HAS to become a prostitute. Very few people would CHOOSE to be drug dealers if the money wasn't so damn good. The reason why people make so much money off these kinds of things is BECAUSE they are illegal.

Call me when you understand the implication that everyone has FREE WILL. I simply won't buy the explanation that someone saw a horror movie and just HAD to kill someone that way. It's STILL their damn fault. And OUTLAWING guns will just assure that the criminals will have better firepower.
