How do the seasons work?

Smile on this peasant who FINALLY got Comedy Central!

Now that I'm ready to tape South Park for myself, can someone explain the seasons to me? I'm aware that Season 6 started this spring and produced 6 episodes with more to follow this summer, and that the average season contains about 15 episodes. So how does it work? Some in the spring, some in the summer, and then no more new ones until the next spring? Does each season end at the same time of year? Or is it like SURVIVOR, where a new season can start any time of year? Thanks. Really, REALLY glad to have Comedy Central. Aaaaah.
