What did Dr. Hibbert's swipe at Laser Eye Surgery mean?

On this one episode of the simpsons, Dr. Hibbert was explaining to his kids that they used to put leaches on people because they thought it helped, but "it only made things a whole lot worse"

and his kid says "like Laser Eye Surgery?"

And Hibbert says "EXACTLY!!"

What is that suppose to mean? I only heard good things about it?

After 10 years, your eyes fall out.

Flanders went blind, remember?

Why have laser surgery to change the radius of curvature of your eyes when advances in medicine MIGHT produce a pill you can take to fix bad vision during our lifetimes. That is what I am hoping for. If it doesn't happen, SO WHAT! The risks of unecessary cosmetic surgery are too great.

A pill?? What sort of pill is going to cure myopia or presbyopia, etc.?

I don't understand why (other than justifying the insurance companies' not covering it) refractive surgery is considered cosmetic - it corrects a medical problem. What next, surgery to correct a compound fracture will be cosmetic too?

Aaron HirshbergSparky Spartacus

I wear bi-focal contact lenses. It corrects my medical problem. Without surgery. A compound fracture can only be corrected with surgery.

True, but not everyone can wear contacts, plus they can cause eye problems, plus they require maintenance, etc. There's frequently more than one way to correct a medical problem. I wore contact lenses for a few years in the 80's, but developed conjunctivitis and had to stop wearing them. I also tried the variable bifocals (I know that's an oxymoron, but I think you'll understand what I mean) and never got used to them (even after a year - hated them).

No, they're working on a pill for that - try to keep up. ;)

Are you against surgery in general, LASIK surgery (because it's cosmetic) in particular, or what? What about athletes who have refractive surgery? How about Navy pilot candidates?

Aaron HirshbergSparky Spartacus

I am against LASIK surgery. As for surgery in general, I AM IN FAVOR. I am in favor of that. Your memory is failing you!

What's so special about LASIK surgery? You didn't answer my questions about athletes & Navy pilots.

That's not news.

By EARL KELLY, Staff Writer, The Capital,

May 14, 2006 -- Annapolis, Md -- Join the Navy and see the world -- in fact, if you're a midshipman at the Naval Academy, you're likely to see it clearer than ever.

Midshipman 1st Class Whit Abraham entered the Naval Academy four years ago with 20/200 vision and was considered "legally blind."

He graduates this month with 20/15 eyesight and is on his way to pilot training.

"It is the best thing I have done for myself at the Naval Academy," he said of the corrective eye surgery that will allow him to pursue his dream of becoming a fighter pilot.

Midshipman Abraham, 22, had worn glasses and contact lenses since the second grade.

Before surgery last year, something that would have been clear to a typical person at a distance of 20 feet looked to Midshipman Abraham to be 200 feet away.

His doctor, Cmdr. Joseph Pasternak of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, said about half of each academy class, roughly 500 students, wear corrective lenses.

About 350 midshipmen, all in their junior year, undergo the corrective procedure each year, said Dr. Pasternak, the head of refractive surgery at the hospital.

"If they are in Annapolis and wearing glasses and want it, we will screen them for it," Dr. Pasternak said. "Some don't want it, and not everybody is a (medically qualified) candidate for it."

The demand for eye surgery is great because two popular service assignments, pilots and SEALS, don't allow corrective lenses, Dr. Pasternak said.

In article ,

Well, a pill that changed blood sugar levels, perhaps? This can cause changes in the refractivity of the lens.

It was my eye doctor who spotted that I had diabetes, when, over the course of a few days, my vision dramatically improved, to the point that without my glasses, I had almost perfect vision. The eye doctor told me to go get my blood checked at my doctor's, and we found that my blood sugar was very high. We got that under control (and now, with the help of a pill, the blood sugar is normal), and my vision returned to its former glasses-dependent state.

As a wearer of bifocals, glasses and contact lenses, all I can say is: 1. My original belief, that only Presbyterians can get presbyopia, was false. 2. The chief symptom of unitaropia is trying to eat an empty bowl of ice cream.

This is beyond urban legend, bordering on complete foolishness. You do need Zinc for healthy eyes, but how much masturbation would it take to lower the Zinc level in your body to the point that .... I cannot believe I am writing this. No Medical Doctor would 1. Be reading this ng. 2. Waste his/her time giving a scientific answer to this question.

In fact, I did not understand your joke at first, simply because it is so ridiculous.

As I just said to Xino - remind me never to tell that joke when I'm sober. Clearly it was ridiculous! It was not meant to be taken seriously! Hey relax, Space!
