Early simpson's episodes seem rough, strange.

Watching some early episodes, and I notice things are different. The characters are drawn different and the animation is rough: jerky, exaggerated angular jaw movements, teeth poking out every which way, even the voices are different. And SMITHERS is an african american for cryin' out loud!!!! Even the voices don't sound the same. Just doesn't seem like the simpson's we all know and love, these early episodes.

Also, I notice that early "comic book guy" sounds more like "Drederick Tatum" than what he sounds like today. Anyone agree? Watch the episode where Millhouse, Martin and Bart buy "Radioactive man #!" and you tell me if that sounds like the real Comicbook guy...

The technology of animation have changed greatly during last 17 years, haven't it? (I myself get fascinated every time seeing their big pupils (of the eyes) when rewatching old episodes). The voices of actors have been transforming and adapting, too. BTW, don't you think that actors are simply getting older? I think a real fan should make no difference between early seasons and the latest ones. He should love each and every episode. There are no lousy simpsons episodes. I don't think that's relevant. Look at The FLinstones from 40 years ago, and there isn't the sense that the animation is bad.

I thought I read somewhere that the style of the early SImpsons was deliberate, but since I don't know if I'm remembering properly, I don't know what reason there might have been for that.

A show starts, it may have a low budget. Nobody wants to spend a lot of money until they can be sure it will be a success. So the animation improves when the money comes in.

It's early in the learning curve, and the people behind the show don't quite know the characters. With time, they realize there may be too much exaggeration on some characters, and they tone it down.

I hear what you are saying about the rough animation of season 1/2. But I have to say, I much prefer the animation circa season 3-8. The ultra-polished animation of the new episodes is too slick I think.
