Who thinks ....

I have heard in this forum that some people prefer the old simpsons, but i disagree i think that the new simpsons are so much better then the ones before i think simpsons actually got better at seires 7 to 8 before that i didn't really watch it!

if you didnt watch the simpsons from 1992 - 1997 then thats a shame because i genuinely believe they are the best episodes and cant quite figure out how anyone could disagree if they've seen ALL the episodes enough. it seems quite logical though that becuase you didnt start watching the show until very late on that you would find the recent episodes better because you are adjusting to the show, its humour and its nature and the humour and nature of the show are very different (inferior) in the simpsons now than they were in the mid 90's.

i'd like to know what you think the show's best features are now? in the mid 90's episodes the main characters all had their good points and bad points - they could be annoying and mean to each other but they also countered that by displaying such endearing qualities (e.g. Bart and Lisa would look out for each other, Homer saved Marge's sisters from losing their jobs even though he hated them and they hated him, because they were MARGE'S sisters, i could go on and on). Homer was always stupid but he used to be charming or cute too....nowadays he is only obnoxious and moronic to inconceivable depths and is handled in a cynical way just to get cheap dumb laughs - that goes for all the characters now as well. Marge used to be the stable figurehead of the family with no major fallacies but she's fallen victim to the writing team's desperate measures in recent years too. Obviously as the years go by the stories get sillier and sillier on the whole...the mid 90's episodes often had very simple, innocent themes regarding childhood or just concentrating on character development....and when they did silly stuff (like Deep Space Homer) it was done with real creative insight and imagination, unlike now...

basically i'd be staggered if anyone who's been watching the simpsons since 1990 feels that its better now than its ever been and is not a show in decline. those who only started watching it in recent years i'm sure would find it better now becasue they are less likely to appreciate what it once was - cos the earlier shows can seem dated and perhaps not as instantly funny cos the humour isnt as reliant on puerile, dumbed-down or cynical gags that are just rehashed from previous (superior) episodes.

i feel very strongly about it as you can see - i'd rather the simpsons finished now then go on the way it is but i can understand how newer fans do not see it that way

Deep is good. Maybe they should cancell the simpsons now, in order to make it a classic. Well that would be crap, to watch nothing on Sunday, but still. Hope it doesn't turn out to be like Married with Children. But I guess that's the fate of every thing. The bell curve. As sad it is to say, I think it's close to curtain time for the Simpsons.
